TMs and TBs in Studio 2021 - TMs shutdown randomly and old TBs simply do not work

I am having a lot of trouble with both TMs and TBs in Studio 2021. For TMs (which I have already updated, in line with the release notes), they simply close from time to time while translating, as if no TM had been added to the project. For TBs, Studio simply does not search for/ recognise the terms, in spite of the TBs having been added to the project and in sipite of the TBs having also been updated, as per the release notes. It only recognises new entries made while using Studio 2021. Any ideas? Needless to say, TMs and TBs are crucial for my work, and I would expect their integration with Studio 2021 not to cause this type of problems!

  • Dear ,

For the termbases, I would recommend that in a first step, you remove the termbases from your project settings in Studio, close Studio, open the TBs in MultiTerm and then reorganize them. Then restart Studio and add the TBs to your project settings. This often helps if no terms are recognized.
If this is to no avail, you can export the contents of each TB into an xml file, create a new TB and then import the xml. Make sure to use the "Import based on entry number" option in order not to loose any terms.

    I hope this helps.

    Best regards
    Annette (from Manfred's account)

  • Thank you for your suggestion. I had tried to reorganise the TMs and it worked, though not immediately and today it is not working anymore.

Having said that, I think it is a pity that recognised terms are no longer highlighted in editor but appear only in the "term recognition window". Insofar as I am concerned, this solution is worse - instead of seeing immediately if any terms are contained in the TB, we have to look at the window...

Furthermore, I wonder how can a new release of Studio be rolled-out with this sort of issues in TBs (and TMs!).

    Dear Margarida,

This problem is not occurring on my Studio setup, but if it were, here's what I would do:

Check that both Studio 2021 and MultiTerm 2021 have been updated to the latest version. do this via Help > Check for Updates in Studio AND in MultiTerm.

Termbases misbehaving can be because you don't have the latest update of MultiTerm installed. Each has to be the right version for the other and the easiest way to achieve them is to make sure they are each up to date.

If you have the most recent update of each installed and the TMs and TBs continue to cause you problems, the next thing to try is a Windows Repair of Studio and MultiTerm. This will repair links between the two pieces of software by checking for and replacing anything that is missing from their setup, for example.

    Here is how:

    1. Close all SDL applications.
    2. Open the Control Panel:
      • Windows Vista/7: Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
      • Windows 8: Right-click on the screen at bottom-left corner and choose Control Panel > Uninstall a Program.
      • Windows 10: Right-click on Start > Control Panel > Select View by: Small Icons > Programs and Features
      • - or type 'Control Panel' in the search line on your bottom Windows toolbar.
    3. Click/highlight the relevant SDL product from the list, e.g. SDL Trados Studio 2021 SR1 > click 'Uninstall/Change' (just 'Repair' for MultiTerm) either on the top toolbar or on the right-click dropdown menu, then select > Yes > Repair. See below for screenshots:
STUDIO:Control Panel window showing a list of installed programs including SDL Trados Studio 2021 SR1 and SDL MultiTerm 2021 SR1.  MULTITERM:Control Panel window with the 'Repair' option highlighted for SDL Trados Studio 2021 SR1 in the list of installed programs.
    4.  Wait for the process to run. This will take longer for Studio than for the 3 main components of MultiTerm. Do NOT try to repair the 'Remove suite of products' entries. These are only for uninstalling.
    5. Restart Studio/MultiTerm.

One more thing. In case this is being caused by display issues, reset your window layout via the View tab:

Trados Studio ribbon menu with the 'Reset Window Layout' option highlighted in the View tab.

If the above does not clear the problem, let us know and give us any extra details, such as whether this is happening with just one or any project and/or TM/TB combination. This is not the normal behaviour of Studio and will be resolvable without a doubt.

    All the best,

  • Dear Alison, I thank you very much for your answer and I will try to do as you suggest, though I believe my versions are both up to date and I have done everything stated in the Release Notes of both Studio and MultiTerm. Clearly, this is not the sort of issues I would expect to find in a new release. I've been searching about this, and I am not the only one who has issues with "old" TBs and TMs. How many new users are there compared to old ones that have upgraded to this new version? Much more important than offering new features is making sure that the basic ones, such as TBs and TMs, are properly inegrated and work as expected, not having to spend hours and hours working around problems that should not exist at all... I am highly disappointed and I regret having upgraded.

    Dear Margarida,

I know that right now it seems that way but Studio 2021 SR1 is not a faulty upgrade. The developers and testers do their best to prepare the software to cope with ANY setup. The Windows Repair method I described above was designed for just this sort of problem, to smooth out the connections between incoming software and existing environment.

I'm a Studio and MultiTerm user and beta tester but not an SDL employee so if you'd like someone to take a look at your setup and sort this for you, I'm sure will set up a case for you.

This problem is solvable and I'm sure you'll be up and running smoothly in no time.

    All the best,

  • Thank you Alison, I understand that and I appreciate your help! I am trying the "repair" option. I use Studio and MultiTerm for several years now and I am sure you understand this is highly frustrating and that the possibility of being unable to use my TBs and TMs is making me highly nervous. I'll let you know if the repair works. All the best!

  • I have tried everything and it still does not work - I cannot update my TMs (error - TranslationProviderThrewException) and term recognition (and thus TBs) simply does not work (it has worked in and out, randomly). I am highly worried by this. Anyway, thanks again for your help!

  • If this may, in the meantime, help anyone who is experiencing the same issue with TBs - try to "open" them again via Project Settings/Termbases every time you open your file for translation. They appear to "shutdown" everytime you close the file for translation. For TMs, I still have no idea how to solve this "exception" and I hope I will not have to go through the process of creating new TMs for all my TMs...

    HI again Margarida,

I'm so sorry you're still having such problems! Maybe you could try a reset - you'll lose your user settings and start from scratch but I think it may solve the issue...

Close Studio and MultiTerm if you have them open.

    Open Windows Explorer and paste

    C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio

into the top address bar, replacing the username with your username. This will take you to your Studio settings folders.

Rename the folder 'Studio16,' call it Studio16old for example, as here:

Windows Explorer window showing the SDL Trados Studio settings folder with a renamed folder 'Studio16old'.

You have to have hidden files and folders visible to do this. Here's where:

Windows Explorer window with the 'View' tab selected, highlighting the 'Hidden items' checkbox to show hidden files and folders.

Open Studio, it will ask you to set everything up again but you may find it stops the malfunctions.

If it doesn't, you've lost nothing because you can delete the new Studio16 and rename the Studio16old to reinstate your settings.

You can export your profile settings before you do this then import them but doing that, you may reimport whatever is causing the malfunctions.

    All the best,
