I'm not sure this is supported in XLIFF 2.0.  Even in XLIFF 1.2 it's only certain underlying filetypes that are supported like XML or HTML.  Patrik Mazanek may be able to shed some light on this question.

can you give me some real life example where would you use this? The way XLIFF works means that adding extra tags would be super rare thing and mainly must be supported by the system you will import the files back.

Text would look something like this, where the text between ** ** would be in italics:

Basically, we would like to be able to apply certain formatting features to our target segments before they are ported back to the tool from which they are extracted.

Not sure about rare, but the cases would be limited in scope (i.e., just italics really).

The problem is that it appears there is no means of adding Quickinsert type tags to the file filter. I can see that were they to be created, however, a custom tag would need to be created for each style in the source document in the tool.

So you want to add ** or actual tag into the output XLIFF?

An actual formatting tag - the ** XYZ "" was just to indicate the text to which we want to add formatting (in this case, italics). Sorry if that was not clear.

Then this cannot be done via QuickInserts - there are quite some limitations in XLIFF on how tags must be handled - http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/xliff-core/v2.1/csprd01/xliff-core-v2.1-csprd01.html#id - as you can see, if you want to add additional tag, it must have unique ID, quick inserts don't support such dynamic way of handling tags.
