Trados Studio has changed the target location of my projects to a project folder within the old target folder.

I can't find a way to change it back. I have tried to change in project settings (setting up a new projects folder, because it needs to be empty), but the next project just goes back to the previous sub folder. Does anyone know how I can bring back the old folder as default target folder? Thanks! Brenda

Trados Studio project settings window with an error message popup saying 'The specified project location folder already contains some files. Please specify an empty or new folder.'

  • Hi

You can't change the location of an existing via its project settings. You can, however, drag the whole project folder or 'cut & paste' it using Windows Explorer to the location where you want it. You can only do that if you have Studio and any other files in the project closed. That will only change the location of that actual project but when you open it again, you'll see the address has changed in that project's settings.

You can change the folder that Studio saves projects to any time when you create a new project, at this step in the Project Wizard:

Trados Studio Project Wizard window showing the option to set the location for a new project with the path 'C:UsersBrendaDocumentsStudioProjects'.

Studio always creates the new project in the folder where the previous project was created.

Hope this is enough info to help!

    All the best,

  • Thanks. I made an empty project and changed the settings there. After that my files go back to the original location again. Very strange though.

  • Hi Brenda

Has the problem been solved? If not, I may have misunderstood your first question.

Changing the settings in an empty project won't work unless you click 'Browse' on the first page of the project creation wizard when you are setting up the project, adding incoming files and other components to it and then complete the project creation wizard.

The program retains the previous address to which you performed any significant operation ready for the next time. All you have to do is click on 'Browse' to find the play you want to save to or open from, for example.

Your files therefore go where you put them or take them from. It took me a while to suss this out but once you understand it you'll have complete control over where your files are.

I hope I haven't now confused the issue Wink

Are you perhaps normally working just via 'Translate Single Document'?

  • Yes! That's exactly what I've done, so I've created a 'fake' project and changed the settings there. (So empty wasn't the right word here:) I had to do that, because a lot of my projects come in a package and they load automatically. Made the project, changed the output location, finished the wizzard (including a file to translate) and left that until I imported my next package. Now my output files go back to the projects folder. Thanks for your help!!!
