Topics for presentation and a call for speakers - Spring Roadshows 2021

Hi,

We're planning for the Spring Roadshows and are looking for some inspiration on topics for presentation!

At the Autumn Roadshows 2020 the feedback was overwhelmingly good for the more practical based presentations that showed people how to use the products, work with various apps etc.  Some of the best received presentations being things like "The Devil's in the Details", "Studio Tips and Tricks", "An open Q&A", various app presentations etc.   So a clear message that people wanted to see presentations that would help them to work with the products.

This Spring we want to build on this so we're building a list of proposed topics at the moment that we can triage and then make sure we have some good presenters lined up to deliver them.  To give you an idea of the granularity in the sort of things we're thinking here's a few ideas that we think would be interesting and each one could easily fill a session:

  • Segmentation Rules
  • Regular Expressions
  • XPath
  • XML Filetypes
  • Embedded Content Processors
  • Machine Translation
  • Working with large files

So no individual topic is too small.  Since we can run several channels (the benefit of an enforced virtual conference!) at the same time and everything is recorded we can potentially do quite a lot here.

So, what would you like to see?  What could we deliver that would be useful for you?

We're also interested in providing a platform for anyone who would like to present at the conference on a topic of their choosing.  So if you are an app developer and you'd like to showcase the things you have done?   If you know a lot about a particular subject and would like the share it... this could be technical, it could be product based, it could be business related.  So a pretty open call for anyone interested in presenting.

So if you would like to participate drop me an email - pfilkin@sdl.com - and we can discuss.

If you just have ideas on what we could cover in the presentations then post them below.  Hopefully you'll have plenty to say!

  • Indeed... and if anyone in the community would like to contribute to this I can make sure we cover it.  I'm currently thinking along these lines:

    • explanation of various xml examples
      • elements
      • attributes
      • CDATA
    • explain how to create a filetype to tackle these examples
      • explain the options and what they mean
    • embedded content
      • look at a few different ways to tackle embedded content
    • xpath
      • only a very very brief intro to this as we intend to run a separate session just on xpath

In the time available this is what I was thinking to address. The difficulty for me is we have two types of user really... those who have some idea and would like to get a bit more advanced support, and those who really know next to nothing at all but regularly seem to attempt to tackle these sort of projects.  So I'm currently aiming this session at the latter.

Would like your thoughts on this?
