Studio 2021 on a Mac with Parallels: Recommendations for efficient file management please?

I work on two different Apple Mac computers, each with Parallels. The default SDL Studio file structure puts my translation memories and project files in my iCloud documents folder. This causes problems with network lag and instability (my Macs have crazy high-performance RAM and CPU so I know it's not a hardware problem). What's the best file structure for keeping my SDL files conveniently close to home inside the virtual Windows systems, *but* which still lets me synchronise and back up my SDL files to my Apple iCloud storage, so that I can access my most recent work from either computer? (My SDL, Mac and Parallels are all running the most recent versions.) Thanks for your suggestions!

  • Hi Rachel,

There have been a number of people asking about managing TM and Projects etc. via cloud facilities they use and this can cause a number of potential issues depending on how they work and therefore how quick things are updated and made available again.

My suggestion would be to have a look at the SDL Trados Live Essential  cloud offering from SDL that you can use with Trados Studio 2021 Professional or Freelance and also with Trados Studio 2019 (with some restrictions). This allows you to maintain your TMs, Termbases and Projects with the cloud system and then access these from whichever computer you are working on. It also allows you to open and work on the files either in Trados Studio desktop or the recently new on-line Editor which you can use via your web browser, so plenty of options especially when using a Mac. I think one of the best parts of this new offering is that it offers a very flexible way in which to work, especially if you have multiple computers and is also designed to work with remote files etc. in the cloud without any of the common performance issues users have found when using their default cloud storage solutions such as icloud, one drive etc. etc. for maintaining their TMs, projects etc.

You can find more info on this at: https://www.sdltrados.com/products/trados-live/essential/

This is a subscription based solution, but it has been offered free for 12 months to people who have purchased/upgraded to Trados Studio 2021, but you would need to check if this is still the case.

    Hope this helps.

    Phil.
