How come a TM grows inexplicably after updating to SDL Trados 2021?
It grows from 63 KB to 180 MB for example. And this is only a small TM. The large TMs use so much server space now that we will have a memory shortage by the end of spring instead of the end of the year.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Very unlikely. Even an empty SDLTM is larger than 63 KB.
So 9 MB will eventually turn out to be 18 MB. We definitely do not have enough storage space (memory) to last until the end of the year if the TMs grow so big.
I'm pretty sure you must have these sizes wrong. 18MB is nothing... you could store hundreds of these on a phone and it wouldn't complain, never mind a computer hard drive.
I guess, one solution for you if you're really struggling is to move to the cloud and use Trados Live. You could put all your TMs in the cloud and then the size won't matter at all for you.

I know that MB is not that much, but this happens to GB as well. So 120 GB changes to at least 240 GB. Noticing that we are a translation agency, working for hundreds of clients with hundreds of TMs which need all to be backup in the cloud or on an HD is taking forever. We turn on our backup overnight, but unfortunately that time is not enough anymore now. Backup is not ready in the morning. Projects for translators get so big, they cannot even be sent out by e-mail anymore. I just don't understand why the TMs have to grow this big at all.

Do you really have a TM of 120 GB in size? A huge EU TM with roughly 2 million segments is about 10 GB. I have never seen a TM of that size you mention...
The reason for the TM size has already been given above: these are all the connections within segments to deliver you context matches and to provide the user with UpLift.
If your backup is not ready over night means to me, that there is something wrong with it. Are you doing a full-size backup every day? This is not really necessary, much better would be a decent backup strategy like full backup every month and every week and then a differential backup every day, like described here www.handybackup.net/tower-of-hanoi-backup.shtml
