Problems with SDL Studio in HomeOffice via VPN

Hi everyone,

I did a quick search on the web and here, but found no results to my problem. We have noticed that SDL Studio is very sluggish at start up, partly freezes for longer periods - showing Not responding -  when working in HomeOffice via a VPN. This is not the case if I go connect remotely to a PC at work where Studio is installed. The problem occurs only when I use my company notebook and the Studio version installed on it. All other applications work fine. Has anyone got any ideas?

Thanks for any pointers as this is really annoying.

Kind regards,

  • Hi ,

When I work from home via VPN, what makes Studio freeze is Sophos Anti-Virus scanning, but it could be anything that could cause Studio to stop/freeze. If you look at Task Manager > Processes and sort processes by Power usage when Studio is having hard time, whatever is at the top in red and marked as Very high might be the culprit. That's how you could identify them, but from there, how you proceed would depend on your local admin rights. In my case, I would need to reach out to IT support. I hope this helps.

    Thanks,

    Naoko

  • Hello ,

    As you said

We have noticed that SDL Studio is very sluggish at start up

It might be wroth ensuring that Studio (and MultiTerm) are added to the antivirus providers 'exceptions' list.

Also as you mention that you don't have any issues if you connect remotely to the PC, it might be worth asking where you have files/projects/resources saved?

Locally or perhaps remotely on the corporate 'sharepoint/one drive' etc.

  • In case you are having problems with VPN speed - which has been a consistent issue here through my employer, and one I remember the translators at the Riksbank in Sweden reporting similar last spring. One suggestion from our IT department that has helped me a lot has been to ask my ISP to revert me to an IP4 IP-Address from an IPv6 one - this has improved the resilience of my VPN connection considerably.

Has this issue been resolved? I work from home on a VPN connection on a laptop provided by my employer, on which Trados 2022 has been installed (local version, not server version). For most documents, Trados freezes (Not responding) after every segment I confirm. Sometimes it's "only" 15-30 seconds each time, but at other times, it can be in excess of one minute between segments. And this happens whether my colleague is using her local version of Trados on her own vpn connection at the same time as me, or not.

Is there a way to run a diagnostic to find out what it is that slows it down so significantly? It could be the VPN connection, but could it also be the fact that we share a file-based TM that's on a server? Or could it be our laptops (which exceed the minimum requirements mentioned in the Trados 2022 FAQ)?

Our IT department doesn't know Trados at all (in a 5,000+ people company, only two of us use it!), so they're at a bit of a loss. And we're quickly reaching our wit's end.

Any new info or help will be appreciated. Greatly.

    Thank you!
