In the meantime, perhaps its worth checking the project settings just to make sure you have Language Cloud activated.

Thank you so much for your quick reply and thanks for the attachment, pictures are always very helpful!

I had it activated indeed (Enabled). I just realized that I had several lines offering Language Cloud as well, so I deleted all unneccessary Language Cloud lines.

I went back to the editor just afterwards, and now in the centre column, between source and targe, the icon AT appears (in blue).

But this is not NMT, correct?

It would be helpful if you could provide a screenshot of your project settings-

If you hover the mouse over the AT icon then this will show where the translation is originating from.

Also I'm wondering if you are using Translation Memory, and actually saving the translations as the segments above haven't been confirmed by the looks of it, which might explain why MT usage might be relatively high.

I understand that using TM can help save MT usage. I need to get used to it. Even after doing online training, this is not something I find very intuitive. I must admit next time I have a big document I will have to try it. And I have translated two documents of 75k words each recently, also (one in November 2020, the second one in December 2020).
