Changing user name in comment

Hi,

I was wondering if it is possible to change the user name for comments made in a translation from my real name to an anonymous one like "translator". The column "user" in the comment window when in editor mode still shows my real name, even after I changed it under "Setup->User Info" as well as in the project settings under Translation Memory Updates to "translator". I even renamed my computer to "translator" and de- and reinstalled Trados once more, but still no luck.

Hope somebody can help.

Regards,

Chris

  • Hi Chris,

I'm afraid this isn't possible in Studio. The name seems to be taken from your windows login. We have raised an enhancement request though and this is on the backlog which just means it'll be reviewed for inclusion when appropriate. It's not one I've seen many requests for but I can see why you might want to.

I guess if it was really important you could edit the sdlxliff and search and replace the comment ID. But be careful if you do this so you don't break the paths to any files that might also use that username.

  • Hi Paul,

Thank you for your prompt reply. I changed my windows login to "translator", but it seems my old name is buried deep somewhere in Windows, so no luck there.

  • Hi!

Would there happen to be any updates on this topic with either SDL 2017 or 2019? I work for many agencies that require that I use their names as the author of the comments. I currently use a VBA macro in Word (when the generated translation is a Word document) for that purpose. However, it would be really neat to have this option upstream instead of having to resort to a downstream solution…

  • Paul, after reading your answer, I changed my windows login name, but still Trados uses an old (very old) user name. Would Trados use the new user name if I delete and reinstall Trados? Thank you for your reply.

  • I think the name that is being used is the USER name of your computer. So for example my computer is set up like this:

    c:\Users\pfilkin\Documents

In here pfilkin is my user name and this is what gets used for comments. I did think that the SDLXLIFF Anonymizer would be able to change this, but it doesn't. Perhaps the quickest fix to the problem is to ask to enhance this plugin to include user names in comments. If that's not possible we may take a look at this and create a new plugin with a few more options as this is something we must be able to address.

  • Hi Paul, thanks for the answer. I checked again in a Windows help and noted that changing the Windows user name alone does not help because the local folder name under Users (c:\Users\pfilkin\Documents) remains the same. I haven't tried the following help yet (since I am a computer dummy and are afraid I screw up my whole settings), but will do after Christmas, when the madness is over. But maybe somebody else is less afraid and checks this out and let us know if it helps: www.tenforums.com/.../89060-change-name-user-profile-folder-windows-10-a.html.
Of course, this is a holistic change of your Windows setting, but I am sure, there are many people here who would be happy to have a more professional name also for their Windows settings.
Nevertheless, it is very urgent for Trados to offer a better solution than this workaround.
    Happy pre-holidays! claudia
  • Hi

I don’t think you should change your windows user name for this. Better to search replace the sdlxliff. But I agree that a simpler solution needs to be offered.
