By manually, I mean on occasion, e.g. using a keyboard shortcut.
Only like this:
It's not possible to use a shortcut to simply get MT irrespective of whether it was set up to provide a translation as you work or not. For that I guess you could take advantage of things like the weblookup tool, or even external tools such as GT4T:

Thanks Paul. Nevertheless, sometimes such a function would be useful, as I prefer Trados Studio's NMT.
