Object reference not set to an instance of an object

Our interpreter is facing the " Object reference not set to an instance of an object." error with SDL Trados while trying to open a package. It doesn't happen with others, but it just happens with her. She is not able to work with the text since the error keeps appearing every time and I doubt she is doing anything wrong. As far as I know, a message like “Object reference not set to an instance of an object” is not supposed to show in a commercial software while the end user is using it. This type of error message is addressed to the SDL Trados developers and therefore Gissan as an end user should not be trying to "fix" it. It is a bug. That is not our department and we can't possibly fix a bug.

I would like to ask SDL Trados technical support to help us tackle or correct the problem .

  • It doesn't happen with others, but it just happens with her.

So what makes you think this is a bug that the software developers need to address?  Perhaps something else on this particular users machine could be the source of a conflict that is causing the problem for her.  Pease can you provide some basic information to get help:

    • what version of the software is your user working with?
    • what version of the software was used to prepare the package?
    • is the user working with any plugins or other add-ons that might be the cause of a problem?
    • can you attach the error stack in full and don't just refer to "object reference" errors as this is simply a very generic message that can have hundreds of reasons for the underlying problem?

    • what is the operating system on the users machine?
    • what have you tried so far?  Have you done the simple stuff such as resetting Studio for example?

If it is a bug then the software developers will look at it.  But we don't know this yet.

If you have a support contract then you are entitled to do this whenever you like.  If you choose not to take one then you need to work with us in here to try and help yourself, and only when we can see it may be a bug and have some idea of what to share with the developers, can we escalate it to them.
