SDL Trados Studio 2021 cannot find TM and TB paths in OneDrive

I am not new to Studio or OneDrive! So, please do not reply if you do not have good knowledge about the issue.
I have been using them seamlessly for many years and my previous versions of Studio did not have this issue.
I use a PC and a laptop and previously when I closed SDL Trados on one machine and obviously waited for the syncing to finish and started with the other machine the project showed exactly where I was with no issues.
now after a PC format and reinstalling Studio, I have this issue and tried everything I could find but with no result, so I wanted to try here too.
the issue is that Studio cannot find the TM and TB on the second machine and gives an error message that the TM cannot be found … and gives the address of the OneDrive folder on the other machine as the location starting with C:\users\****\OneDrive …
clink ok to find the TM or cancel …
when you click OK and find the TM in the OneDrive folder it makes it as if it is only on that machine and next time on the other machine you have to follow the same procedure.
Knowing that OneDrive synchronizes all files properly between the 2 machines.
I have contacted OneDrive support and they could not find anything to help from their end.
I have contacted SDL support they say it is an issue with the file-sharing solution (OneDrive, Google Drive, DropBox, etc. …)
I am not happy with the answer and this issue did not exist in Studio 2015, 2017, and 2018 and I have been suing studio and One drive since 2008.


On the cloud thing also I could not add any TM or TB (for this one I may be new and do not know the tricks!) but anyway, I hate monthly subscriptions (after one year) while I already paid a lot for Studio over years and always upgraded.
On my previous versions of SDL Trados for me, Studio and OneDrive worked better than any cloud!

I really regret upgrading to 2021 as I thought the cloud thing would be the same as Memo Q which is not, to my knowledge. 

some say that it is not a good idea to have TM and TB on OneDrive while it was perfect for me for so many years, especially after knowing about changing the default project template location 3 years ago from this forum.

  • Thank you very much, I appreciate your help and efforts on this matter.
    I have unlinked OneDrive on both machines and changed the folders on both machines out of C but still, I have two folders on 2 different computers. 
    You cannot use the web-based files, do you? So, OneDrive creates a local folder no matter where it might be on each machine and now again Studio treats them as two different paths again and I get exactly the same error message 
    I have created 10 test projects 5 on each machine and tried to open them from the other and the result was the same. 

    If I got you wrong about your suggestion please correct me accordingly. 

  • Is the physical path the same on both machines?

    This is what you see, when you go to OneDrive. But this cheats you about where the folder is. You need to see this:

    This path must be identical.

    Because I use a desktop and a laptop, I quite often have the situation, that I need to synchronize the PCs. However, I never put my files in the cloud. Instead, desktop and laptop have exactly the same paths for TMs and TBs. I use AllwaySync for synchronizing between desktop and laptop. This does not take much time and works much better than any cloud. I also copy the current project from desktop to laptop or the other way round.

    yes, apart from that on one machine it is D, and on the other it is E, I can make both D and try to see if that works! 
    I will try this for the moment but still think there is something wrong with Studio defaults and they may address that as part of a cumulative update or service release (hopefully) later. 

  • Thank you Jerzy Czopik very much for all your help and support with this issue, I appreciate it as you did not leave me halfway and you directed me in the right direction.
    for anybody else who may have a similar issue, now I have OneDrive on both PCs in a similar driver e.ge. drive F. so Studio may find the path easier. As I changed the Onedrive location twice and had many folders with the same name I restore Windows to a clean install again and now I have Studio working as before. Thank you to Jesús Prieto also for his input on this matter.

    I am glad it works now. Quite often a small reason cann cause big problems.
