Studio 2017 crashes when trying to open a big Word file in the Editor

Hello everyone,

I know there are many threads about this kind of problem already, but I couldn't find a solution...

I created a project in Studio 2017 and prepared the source files for translation without any issue. One of the files is a rather big Word file with some pictures and loads of formatting tags (looks like a convert from a PDF, the customer sent it as a Word file already), but nothing unusual, it's just about 15,000 K, I work on a lot of similar files all the time.
When opening the file in the Editor, Studio simply shuts down, with no error message, no explanation whatsoever to find out what could be happening.
The other files within the same project open without any problem.

After reading many threads here, I turned off the Match repair option, created a new Word file from scratch copying and pasting from the original file, created another Word file without the pictures (that shouldn't have to happen, but I'm that desperate), nothing is working, Studio keeps crashing every time.

Any idea to solve the issue, please? What should I look for in the Word file that may cause the crash?
Thank you!!

  • Thank you very much, Loredana!

I had already checked the threads you mention without finding an answer to my problem. I did turn off Match reapair etc.

Today I tried dividing the document as you suggested, still no luck.

So far, the only partial solution I have found is creating an unformatted Word source file, translating it to have it in my TM, then repreparing my original source file, and instead of opening it in the editor and having Studio crash, directly creating a target file.

I ran some tests with partial translation and the target Word file I get is fine, most of the segments are translated so I won't have to manually copy-paste too much untranslated content. I'm afraid reviewing against the source in Word will be very time-consuming as I usually do it in the editor, but I don't see any other way right now and I'm on a deadline so I had to do something.

If someone has another suggestion, please feel welcome to share.
    Thanks!!

    Sophie
