The only purpose of PDF is display on a monitor or print on paper. Whatever program you use, it will first convert the text into an editable format like Word docx, then work with that.

The first step should be that you ask your customer to supply you with the file they used to generate the PDF, probably an InDesign file? There is a chance that they have the different languages on different layers in the InDesign file, so that they coupld provide you just with the English...

If you have to work with the PDF, you need to find a way to convert it to editable text. Acrobat Pro is quite good in my experience, and you can define which area of the document should be converted to text.

So the selection of text to translate has to happen outside of Studio if your source format is really PDF. It's really tough to work from that and you should avoid it if at all possible. You will not get a pdf when you export your translations, you will get a Word file. How the formatting of the PDF is preserved is largely at the mercy of the PDF -> Word converter (whichever one you use).

you are right I realize that the most convenient way is to "erase" the inappropriate text from its source.

It seems that there is no other way :-)
