TM corruption when syncing to a NAS

Hi... I wonder if anyone can help me with this issue?

I sync my desktop working files and TMs to a NAS, but since I started doing so, I've had a series of problems with TMs becoming corrupted. The issue doesn't affect other Studio files.

Has anyone else had this issue? If the TM Repair utility can repair the TM file (which is not always the case), Studio 2021 can still recognise it as corrupt, but only sometimes. And even those TMs flagged up as corrupt can still be opened in the Translation Memories View window.

So far, I've had to reconstruct 3 large TMs, with the inevitable waste of productive time.

I think the problem may be that my desktop has been syncing continuously with the NAS, and that perhaps the TMs I've had trouble with have been trying to do their normal job and sync at the same time. So for the time being, I'm going to suspend the syncing operation throughout the working day, and then do a "catch-up" sync at the end of the day. Maybe that will work, but in the meantime, any other insights or help would be gratefully received...

Many thanks

Peter

  • Hi ,

I don't sync files to the NAS, but I think this way is asking for problems. Same thing about Dropbox, OneDrive and the like that keep syncing… The bigger the file, the bigger chances of corruption.

I'd run a typical daily backup overnight to the NAS, when nobody is using the files. Or synchronize manually only when you have finished working.

  • Same here, bad idea. I do not sync TMs and TBs LIVE from Windows to NAS. What I do is syncing those daily at 8 pm. This works and does not corrupt the files. And it is fully enough to have them backed up. From there (NAS1) these are RTRR-synced to NAS2 and then copied from there to NAS3 at 2:00 am, to be then copied from NAS3 to NAS4 at 0:00 am.

  • Wow... That's quite a backup system you have there! Thanks a lot for a really useful answer, and taking the time to help. This is the first time in all the years I've been using the various iterations of Trados, Studio, etc., and already I've met two really helpful colleagues.

    I'm very grateful... Thanks a lot :-))

  • To be precise now:
I have 4 NAS, numbered NAS1 to NAS4. The NAS1 is the main one, the most powerful one.

All my working files, including Studio projects are stored on NAS1. There is a share on it, which is mounted as a drive in Windows. However, due to speed limitations, all TMs and TBs are stored on a local SSD (a M2 SSD, very fast, but not as fast as the recent ones). This is for speed and works without any problems.

Every day at 8:00 pm all TMs and TBs are synced to the same share, where all my other files are. NAS1 replicates this share in real time (RTRR protocol) to NAS2. NAS2 uses Rsync protocol to write the changes from this share (it is a setting in the configuration of Rsync replication, so not all files need to be copied) to NAS3 at 2:00 am. NAS3 uses Rsync to replicate to NAS4 at 0:00 am. This way I can go back 48 hours, if necessary.

The RTRR replication isn't necessary. If I would replace this method with replicating NAS1 via Rsync to NAS2 at 4:00 am, it would allow going back 72 hours.
