I have also checked into my Trados studio 2021 settings and indeed the option to hide empty segments that have been merged was automatically checked. However, I created a project and before merging any segments I unchecked the option from file- options - automation and then merged the segments, and it worked.

Did you follow different steps?

Hi, Loredana,
I have long had this box unchecked in Studio. When I recently noticed that the merged segments were not being displayed, I suspected that an update had caused the setting to change. But when I checked the setting, the box was still unchecked. I tried checking and unchecking the box several times, but to no avail.
Since that time, I have done translations of other documents, and the function is performing as usual (meaning the merged segments are displayed as empty and locked). I still cannot explain why this one translation did not do that. I can only suspect that there was something in the source file that prevented it.
Fortunately, this is not a life or death matter. But I just wonder why these things happen, and the Trados messages are often incomprehensible (at least to me).
Thanks for responding.
Regards,
Michael
