I am not asking a question, just describing the situations I have encountered after waiting more than a year to upgrade from Studio 2019 to Studio 2021. This is not intended to be a rant, just a listing of the reasons why I am going back to using Studio 2019.
I upgraded from Studio 2019 to Studio 2021 at the beginning of June and almost immediately encountered the first two irritating bugs:
1. Cursor randomly disappears in the Editor window. Workaround: click in Translation Results window and click back in Editor window.
2. Studio takes too long to change a regular apostrophe to a curly apostrophe, so that, for example, typing "Studio's faults" becomes "Studio' faultss" if I type at regular speed. Workaround: pause after typing every apostrophe to let Studio catch up.
I could live with these, but they made me wonder whether I should be using Studio 2021, since there were no real improvements that I could see over Studio 2019 (at least in the way I use Studio).
I have not found a workaround for the third problem, which appeared just a few days after the latest Studio update to 16.1.8.4404 (Windows 10 is fully up-to-date at all times).
Today I finalized a project with three files and then realized that I had to make a minor change to one of the files. After editing the file and closing it, I tried to finalize it again.
Unfortunately, the "Batch tasks" menu item showed "(No tasks available)".
Then I noticed that all three of the file names ended with ".docx.sdlxliff", as if none of them had been finalized. How bizarre. Luckily there were only three files and I knew which one I had edited. Otherwise there would have been no way to use the file names to determine which file had been edited.
I closed Studio, restarted it and checked the file names again. This time the names of the two files that had not been edited ended with ".docx" (as they should, since all three files had been finalized before I edited one of them). The name of the file I had edited still ended with ".docx.sdlxliff", but the "Batch tasks" menu still showed "(No tasks available)" for this file.
I closed and restarted Studio a second time. The "Batch tasks" menu still showed "(No tasks available)".
I then tried opening all three files, expecting Studio to give me the prompt about do I want to revert the files to unfinalized status again (I don't remember the exact prompt). Even though two of the file names ended with ".docx", the prompt did not appear. I closed the editor again and looked at the file names. The two file names still ended in ".docx", as if I had not opened them again. The "Batch tasks" menu still showed "(No tasks available)".
I opened all three files again (again no prompt), but this time I made sure that I changed one segment in each file, saved everything and closed the editor. Still no changes in the file names and still unable to finalize.
I then repaired Studio. When I reopened Studio the names of all three files ended in ".docx.sdlxliff", which is appropriate, since I actually changed one segment in each file. But the "Batch tasks" menu still showed "(No tasks available)", which meant I was unable to finalize any of the files.
I checked Windows Update to make sure there were no new updates to Windows that needed to be installed (there were no new updates), restarted Windows and reopened Studio. Still no change in the file names and still unable to finalize.
The only workaround I can think of is to recreate the project, copy all three of the sdlxliff files from the old project to the new project and then finalize all three files again. I will be doing that for this project.
In summary, I could live with the first two inconveniences above, but the third problem appears to have no workaround and affects a basic function that I use multiple times a day.
I assume that Studio 2021 is "superior" in some way to Studio 2019, but I have not noticed any improvements over Studio 2019 in the way I use Studio.
I am also concerned that the first bug where the cursor randomly disappears has not been eliminated yet, even though multiple people have reported it. Although I briefly mentioned the second bug in this forum, no one else has, so I am not expecting it to be addressed any time soon, if ever. Even though I installed Studio 2021 on a fresh installation of Windows 10, it might only be a bug in my installation of Studio.
However, encountering a third bug in a basic function a few days after the latest Studio update has, frankly, shaken my confidence in Studio 2021. Keep in mind that I waited a year before I upgraded to Studio 2021 at the beginning of June, so I have been using it for around a month.
I do not want to be blindsided by a serious problem in the middle of a big job when I am under time pressure, as some people have been reporting in this forum, so I will be reverting back to Studio 2019 for future jobs, hoping that more bugs will be eliminated from Studio 2021 in the meantime.
