Studio 2017 multiple issues

I installed 2017 on a new laptop last week and started work on a project. I didn't transfer my license over from my old laptop yet. To begin with everything was fine, but then suddenly the error appeared that it couldn't access the translation memory. I finished up my file and rebooted the laptop. Trados failed to start at all with error message something like 'failed to initialize translation memories'. I did a repair - no effect. I followed instructions from the forums about renaming settings files etc. which allowed me to load Trados, but still the TM would not load. If I tried to click the translation memories view then Trados would lock up and crash. Closed Trados and reopened, and then things went back to square 1. I renamed settings files which gave me access to Trados so I could finish the file I was working on for a deadline yesterday. Today I deleted 2017 and reinstalled, but the identical errors recurred. Interestingly the 'view', 'add-ins' and 'help' toolbars are all greyed out an inaccessible. If I try to click them then the tool bars flash on and off and then Trados crashed again.

  • Hello ,

There are a few things i think need checking first.

Did you do a clean install of Studio (via your RWS Account) or has the 'image' been copied from one machine to the other?

If Studio has been copied, I recommend this is removed and installed directly from your account.

As you have mentioned you have installed Trados Studio, on a new machine- have you also transferred your resources (TM's/TB's etc) to the new machine?

I'm asking, because sometimes users overlook the fact, the resources are not saved in Trados Studio itself- but in the relevant folder on the machine-

    for example-

Screenshot of a file explorer window showing Trados Studio resources folder with various file types including SDLTB, SDLTM, and SDLXLIFF.

If you have transferred the resources, please check they are available in the relevant folder.

Now create a new project using the default template (not one you may have transferred over as this will be looking in the wrong place).

If the problem persists, please share a screenshot of both the global and project settings. Any other screenshots that are relevant would also be helpful.

Its also worth noting that if you haven't transferred the license (i.e. activated the new installation on the new machine) this will be running only in trial mode and some features are NOT available so i would recommend activating as soon as possible.

  • Hi Steve

I did a fresh install by downloading Studio from my licenses in my RWS account. I copied the TM directly over from my old install on the other machine. The project was something I created fresh on the new machine, but using an existing TM. Actually it started out working fine - I was pleasantly surprised how simple it was. After a couple of days of using it however, suddenly the problems emerged. I don't want to transfer the license until I'm sure that the glitches have been worked out.

When click 'project settings' it turns up a dialogue box saying 'The translation provider 'xxx.sdltm' could not be opened and has been disabled'. When I click OK to remove the box it keeps reopening again straight away so I have to click multiple times before it disappears, or else reboot Trados (sometimes it doesn't disappear). I don't know what specific settings I could screenshot for you with the project - it's basically a vanilla install with default global settings.

Regardless of the project, the Translation Memories view won't open and it slows to a crawl when I try. Sometimes crashed outright...

  • Hello ,

Could you please provide screen shots of your settings (Global and Project) where we can see the TM(s)

Screenshot of Trados Studio Global Settings showing an empty Translation Memory and Automated Translation pane with no TMs listed.

Screenshot of Trados Studio Project Settings with a single TM named 'Sample Translation Cloud' listed under Translation Memory and Automated Translation.

This really does help us understand what maybe causing the issues.

I would also suggest creating a new local TM (the original TM maybe corrupted) and see if the issues persist with new TM.

Also please confirm exactly where you have the TM saved and whether you are also syncing with OneDrive (or similar).

The more information you provide, the easier it is for us to try and diagnose the issue.

  • Hi Steve

    Please see screenshots:

    1) Project settings

Trados Studio project settings window with a warning message about language pairs not set for translation providers.

    2) Project settings after attempting to re-initialize the TM

Warning dialog box in Trados Studio stating 'The translation provider Chineses Simplified-English could not be opened and has been disabled.'

    3) Attempting to click on Translation Memories tab in the bottom left (this can crash Trados altogether but in this case it did not)

Trados Studio with an error dialog box saying 'No TM can be loaded' when clicking on Translation Memories tab.

    4) After closing Trados and attempting to boot it up again. In this case Trados fails to load unless I go back and rename the user settings, whereupon it is rinse and repeat.

Error message in Trados Studio stating 'The translation memory data file engine returned an error: unable to open database file'.

    5) Location I saved my TMs to:

    This PC/Documents/Studio 2017/Translation Memories

    6) Yes my laptop is syncing with Onedrive
