Im sorry to hear that you are getting such last minute stress.

The problem is most certainly an issue with file type, which is needed for both sdlxliff creation and generating of target.
Here is why I am certain about the root cause:

• (+) Trados Studio 2021 - after latest update: Failed to save target content cannot find file type definition with id Excel 2007 v 2.0.0.0 - Licensing and Installation - Translation Productivity - RWS Community (sdl.com)
• Warning "This file was created using a file type definition that does not exist on your system (FileType ID) when opening an SDLXLIFF in Trados Studio 2021
• Trying to save target version showing message: 'Failed to save target content: Cannot find file type definition with id [FileType Name/Version]' (sdl.com)
  
  
  

I dont have enough details to advice best root possible to get this resolved.
But what I would try is the following:

1. Ensure your TM's are updated with the translations
2. File - Advance Save: See if you can "Save Source As"
3. if yes, recreate your project
4. Run Batch Task - PreTranslate against your TM mentioned in 1.

Thank you for your reply and suggestions.
I have followed the steps you suggest, but the file cannot be saved to the source language.

In the meantime, I managed to solve the issue myself by saving the .xlsx file to an earlier version .xls. This worked fine and enabled me to deliver my translations but I'm concerned that some of the features my client uses in their Excel charts may no longer work.

The fact that I was able to do this without re-translating the files shows that my TMs had indeed been updated.

Please also note that I am working in Studio 2019, not 2021.

I will try reinstalling Studio again and see if the problem persists.

What is peculiar is that I'm only getting this with Excel files. However, since I got my laptop back from repair two weeks ago, and had to reset Windows (and everything else for that matter), the security settings in the Attachments Manager mean that I have to "unblock" each MS Office file (whether Word or Excel) to open it. I have not yet found how to change the settings as I can't find the Attachments Manager, even though I have asked for all hidden files to be displayed.

I know this has nothing to do with Studio, but I do wonder what is going on in the background to all these issues!

Great that you found a solution.

Now that you confirmed you are using 2019, it does open discussions around long term resolutions, as I appreciate no one wants ongoing concern. Certainly not without clear reason.

As I mentioned the issues are most certainly around file type management. 

Who creates the sdlxliff file? Your client? What version of Studio do they use?

"The Excel file I am working with is a .xlsx and I am using the latest Office 365 version of Excel. My version of Studio 2019 (SR2) was downloaded only a couple of weeks ago. I have had to reinstall everything on my computer further to a repair last month, and am having quite a lot of other issues with settings.

I am working with a direct client so cannot deliver sdlxliff files. I have looked at the answers to similar issues and I don't think it can be a problem of using old projects or versions since everything has been newly created."
