I have been able to reproduce your concerns.

Please see screen prints below, with Canada being declared a variable

Can I ask you to check what state your TM is in. You can see that from my screen print the TM has a warning icon and needs to be "upgraded"


Because when I run it, the TM gives a higher result



I also find that when making these TM changes, best close the file out of the editor view so that cached placeholders can refresh accordingly

The downside is now I have a TM double the size I had before. Well, you can't have everything...

This makes me wonder if this was the standard behaviour of TMs before the upgrade option was introduced. Do you think this may be a bug?

Víctor Falcó - so pleased we managed to get to the bottom of this. 
With regards to the size - perhaps see if recomputing the fuzzy index helps a bit.

Recompute Fuzzy Index Statistics in Translation Memory Settings never updated and showing warning message 'It is recommended that the statistics are recomputed, because the translation memory has significantly grown in size.' (sdl.com)
