Hi Angela,

It's not a silly question at all. You can set Studio to capitalise the first letter of sentences, just as you can Microsoft Word for example.

Do this via File>Options:

You'll see there are other customisations you can use there too.

thank you. The thing is that if I flag "Capitaliz the first letter of a sentence", Studio capitalize EVERY first letter of a new segment as tou can see below:

Wheter there is a comma, a full stop, semi-colon or nothing at all. It capitalize EVERY single segment. And this is a problem because this way I have to correct manually every segments, adding or deleting the capital letter at the beginning.

Is this only a problem with my version of Trados Studio (2021)? Or maybey there is a way to correct the wrong capital letter automatically and not manually with the QA?

I don't use this functionality, whether in Studio or in Word. I prefer to be in total control so that my text follows my keyboard input precisely. I just presumed that the rule would work the way it does in Word. Sorry about that. There may be a setting that solves this but I don't know... Paul, do you know of a way to achieve capitalisation after a full stop in Studio in the same way as it is achieved in Microsoft Word, i.e. only after a full stop at the end of a sentence?

There is an Exceptions button to click after selecting the option I abbreviated in my previous quote and you can add individual contexts where you don't want a full stop, such as 'e.g.' or 'i.e.' but I can't see any way of adding the beginning of a segment as an exception as the dialogs don't accept regex...

It feels like a segmentation problem rather than a Studio one.  If these phrases are in separate segments Studio cannot know, and doesn't care, about the punctuation in the segment before.  Can you segment the file in a different way?

I cannot segment the file in a different way because it is an .srt file, subtitles, so they must be segmented that way.

This means that there is no solution?

I realise now that I misunderstood Angela's question. I read the word 'segment' as 'sentence' - sorry! I thought that the question was specifically about full stops at the end of a sentence, but in the same segment. My bad!

I should have said it is impossible to set Studio to start the next segment with a capital ONLY when the previous segment ends with a full stop.

Sorry, Angela, I misunderstood you... The default segmentation rules only end a segment after a full stop OR after some form of original file format break recognised by the software. I don't see how you could set a segmentation rule to ignore the breaks after, for example a comma, without creating enormous segments.

Yes, I supoose so

But when working with subtitles, this could be very very helpful. Also because, after verification Studio recognises that there are some words that should have capital letters (because the previous segment ends with a full stop).

So, if it sees them, why doesn't  want to help me?
