Embedding content as placeholders in Word files

Hi, I'm wondering whether there is a function in Studio that allows you to create placeholders out of specific tagged terms in Word files instead of using the tw4wininternal style.

Let's suppose I have a sentence like this:

I do not like <brand>, but I love <brand>.

I want to create a placeholder out of <brand>. So, my question, how can I do that?

Thanks in advance for your help

  • The best solution for this would be to add the brands as a variable:

    https://multifarious.filkin.com/2013/11/24/making-variables-work-for-you/

The article is 8 years old so the UI and features around managing variable are a lot richer now and you don't really need an app to help.  But the principle may be helpful.

If you want to convert words/phrases into a tag, which is what the tw4wininternal style would do when handling Word files, then you could use the "Trados Data Protection Suite" from the appstore.  This works by allowing you to create lists f words/phrases, or regular expression patterns, that can then be used to tag the recognised words/phrases/patterns  for the files in your project.  This will work for any filetype, not just Word.

  • Thanks for your reply, Paul. I will have a look at those solutions. I have a further question, if you do not mind.

What's the purpose of the "Embedded content" in the File Type dropdown for Word 2007-2019?

I have tried that but it does not work properly.

Trados Studio File Type settings window showing 'Embedded content' selected with description about processing of content embedded in a document.

Trados Studio translation segment preview with the first segment 'I do not like' encoded and the second segment 'because I like' missing.

The sentence would be: I do not like <segment>, because I like <segment>.

As you can see, only the first <segment> is encoded, whereas the second one disappears completely.

I tried to switch from placeholder to tag pairs, and it works, but this is not what I am looking for.

  • If you have configured the placeholder to be always included, then you can do nothing about it. From what I observed in Excel, this is indeed a problem in Studio. Such placeholders in front or at the end of the segment get separated and hidden. They sit between segments and can be cut off there and inserted into segment, if you use "Show all content" instead "Show all segments" in the display filter.
