Trados Studio: Creating a new package, tracked changes + commented document... getting "object reference not set to an instance of an object"

Hi,

I wonder whether you could help me. I am trying to create a new package using a Word document containing tracked changes and comments. I tried to switch tracked changes (not accepting them as I need to maintain and translate them) but I still get the "object reference not set to an instance of an object" error message (see below). Any idea, how to proceed, please?

Many thanks, best regards Jitka

  • Hello

I've struggled knowing how best to reply to an error that is somewhat so generic, although I appreciate your context is specific to

    1. MS Word File

Lets first troubleshoot your MS Word File, by answering these questions for me

1.1 Can you save target as, using your current project?
If yes, skip the rest and move to 2.
If no, then we need to see if there is an issue with the file or an issue derived from translation. So ...

1.2 Can you take the source file and create a second project?
If no, try single document approach which is not dependent on a "project template"

1.3 On this new project, can you save target as with no translations?
If no, then we can reset a few Studio settings and take a closer look at the file integrity
If yes, then there is nothing wrong with the file or how Studio can manage such a file.

1.4  Can you copy source to target and save target as?
If no, then we can reset a few Studio settings and take a closer look at the file integrity
If yes, when we will need to review the original project translations as something has compromised the file - at a minimum run a QA.

    2. Package

If you can take your original project, save target as error free then there is reason to think this error is being specific to the package process. I found this and thought it was interesting: https://community.rws.com/product-groups/translationproductivity/f/studio/10042/message-object-reference-not-set-to-an-instance-of-an-object-when-trying-to-create-a-project

Perhaps review your package settings and remove all integrated dependencies

    Alternative

In a manner you deem safe and secure, you are welcome to share your files with me. I am wary you are on Studio 2019 so what ever the cause - could be fixed in 2021 which is what I would test.

I hope this gives you plenty of guidance - do let me know what you find
