SDLXLIFF files comply 100% with the XLIFF 1.x specification.  XLF or XLIFF files should also comply with either the XLIFF 1.x or 2.x specifications and then Trados Studio will be able to open them.  It has nothing to do with being different to an SDLXLIFF.  Can you share a snippet of your XLF file in here and then we can provide the best advice to handle the file.  One way or the other I'm pretty confident Trados Studio can handle your file... unless it's not well formed and is a complete disaster of a file.

But a quick look and I suspect the problem is the way the language codes have been written.

"en_gb" and "fr_fr"

The underscore is not correct.  It should be a hyphen:

Thank you for the hyphen tip. Now my problem is that when creating a new project for this xlf in Studio, it won't let me specify that this is a file for translation. The only accepted options are For localization and For reference. Hellllp!

If you can share the file, or enough of it for me to test, I'd be happy to help.  Please provide it as I showed above so I don't have to retype everything in your image.  So insert as code, and don't just copy paste the text into your reply.  Or if you still can't find a way to do that email me the xlf file - pfilkin@rws.com

Thanks for sending me the file.  It's a different file to the one you shared a picture of, but there are two problems with it that would prevent Studio from opening it:

1. the file extension is *.xlif which doesn't exist.  You could either add *.xlif to the wildcard recognisers on the xliff filetype or rename the extension of the file to *.xliff (two f's) or *.xlf, AND
   
   
2. the language attributes are invalid.  In xliff you do not use this:
   srcLang="en-gb"  trgLang="fr-fr"
   
   You use this:
   source-language="en-gb" target-language="fr-fr"

I made these changes and the file opens without a problem.  I'll email you my changed file so you can test it.
