How to set up XML settings ?

Hello,

I was asked to use “the correct XML tag settings with SDL Trados Studio”, and was provided with a file named CWCMS content.sdlftsettings.

Is it important or mandatory to install these settings?

Also, in the file types of project settings, I am not sure whether I have to tick (or untick) one (or several) of the XML boxes in the right column?

As it is my first time dealing with XML files, I would be grateful if you could give me some advice because I don't know how to do it.

Thanks in advance.*

  • Is it important or mandatory to install these settings?

Yes.  If the company who provided it are handling XML files that have rules about what should be translated and what should not then they will be contained in these settings so you only see the translatable text.  And if they only send you an sdlxliff that has already been prepared then you will not be able to save a target file or use some other features unless you have this specific filetype installed.

All you need to do is import the settings:

Trados Studio options window showing File Types list with a red arrow pointing to the 'Import Settings...' button indicating the action to import XML file settings.

That will prompt you to create the filetype, you say yes, then the new custom XML filetype will appear at the top of your list so you can create projects with the XML files they send you for translation.

It probably makes sense to create a Project Template specifically for this customer and then you create the projects using settings only for them.
