Cannot connect to agency Groupshrae TM Server after latest Studio 2021 update

Hi,

Since I updated to the latest service release, I have been unable to connect to the agency TM Server I usually work with.

When I brought this up with the agency, they just told me to uninstall the update and use Studio 2017, which I refuse to do as I invested in 2021 and I want to continue to be able to use it.

They are having the same problem with a number of freelancers. Could you please advise me what to do? Do you need to know the name of the agency and perhaps liaise with their IT department so they can update to a version that is compatible with their freelancers?

Please let me know

Thank you

Anne Prestwich

  • Do you need to know the name of the agency and perhaps liaise with their IT department so they can update to a version that is compatible with their freelancers?

As much as I'd love to do this and have all our GroupShare customers working with the latest versions I don't think this is feasible.  Some customers don't take a support and maintenance contract for GroupShare (which I really believe is foolish) and so they would have to pay for the upgrade.  Not all companies are prepared to do this, especially since they also work with a lot of their own in-house translators all working with Studio 2017 as well.  They might have also built their own integrations using the APIs, or use a Business Management solution that also integrates to the older version and not the new, and would also need to ensure these also worked with an upgrade.  So it's not an insignificant task to upgrade a server solution like this.

The most practical approach would be for them to create project packages and send them to you.  Then you could do the work and send return packages back.  The packages could also contain Project Translation Memories that would be relevant to their Server Translation Memory for the job you have and you'll still be able to look up useful information they wanted to share.

If they actually use TM Server and not GroupShare then this is really old and in this case you're probably stuck unless they would be happy to send you a TMX for you to convert to get TM matches.

  • Thank you Paul for your reply. I'll try to encourage the agency to get a contract for GroupShare but I have no idea whether they'll consider it. For the time being I will ask for the TM in TMX format so I can import it into my local TM and see if that helps. When I use my Studio 2019 freelance version I don't have any problems so perhaps this is something to look into if you've had reports from other translators having trouble since they installed the latest Studio 2021 SR2 update?

Thanks again for your help with this matter.

  • Hi Giorgio,

I've experienced the same issues (when connecting to an older TM server )after the upgrade to TradosStudio2021SR2_16.2.8.9097.

Trados Studio error message popup saying 'Failed to connect to server. Please check your server connection settings, network and internet connections, and that the server is available.' with an OK button.

You don't need to downgrade to Studio 2017 but rather Downgrade to latest CU for Trados Studio 2021 SR1

    The workaround was the following.

    1. Close Trados Studio 2021 SR2.
    2. Download the ZIP file zipfrom our Download Center [https://downloadcentercdn.sdl.com/TP/Trados/T2021/CUs/SR1_CU8/TradosStudio2021_SR1_CU8_4404.zip].
In Google Chrome, right-click on the hyperlink and select Save Link As... to download the file to a location of your choice. In other browsers, it may be possible to perform the download directly by clicking on the link.
    3. The ZIP file contains an .exe file. Extract this file to a temporary folder of your choice, such as C:\temp. This .exe file applies to all editions of Trados Studio 2021 SR1.
    4. Uninstall Studio 2021 SR2 from control panel …
You may be asked to restart the computer. Please do so before continuing.
    5. From within the previously selected a temporary folder of your choice, such as C:\temp , double-click the .exe file. This will install the latest release and replace as well as update the files in the Trados Studio 2021 SR1 installation folder as appropriate.
    6. If everything went well you should be able to start the Studio SR1.
Check File > Setup > Servers and you should be able to see green status of the connection to the articular server.

    Simon
