Trados Studio capped at ca. 15% of my CPU and freezes when above

Hello everyone,

Trados Studio (2019 version, will use 2021 in a few weeks or so) can't use more than ca. 15% of my CPU (Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700 CPU @ 3.40GHz, 4GHz in Turbo mode) and then freezes (and sometimes shuts down). It can happen when working on large files or with large TMs for example (I have 32Gb of RAM and an SSD, so the CPU is the only issue).

I tried to give it a higher priority for CPU usage in the tasks manager, but it didn't change anything. Other opened programs use roughly 5/10% of my CPU, so when Studio freezes the total CPU usage is about 20-25% only.

I use Hunspell spell checker and no problem with my AV software.

Does someone have any idea to fix this?

Have a lovely evening,

Romain

  • OK, but the bottle neck will be the whole system. The RAM with CPU and HDD speed. These have improved dramatically in the last years. The M2 SSD gives much more performance in my current systems. So I think a 6 years old system is not performant enough for Studio with large TMs and files. A possible solution could be using project TMs instead of the full TM, because the TM size would be much lower then.

  • Thanks for the explanation! The memory limitation clearly describes why it is hitting the disk so much. Something about the Windows 10 update caused much less memory to be available to Trados, apparently, or something. The amount of disk writing when I'm browsing in Trados to confirm segments is ridiculous. It is so slow, I'm considering opening all trados files with MemoQ, but I do like to do what agencies ask.   Do you know if 2021 will offer a 64 bit version to get around the memory limitation?
