Upgrade to Studio 2021 should help a lot with performance as there are improvements done to Editor view.

Rest depends on where is the bottleneck. You did not mention how large(size / number of segments ) are the files you're working on or how large are the TM's and if they are set to speed (specially if they are large).

I would recommend to try and identify where is the bottleneck by disabling temporary some of the resources you use (TM, Termbase, plugins).

Make sure to also keep project files and resources on the SSD.

Some operations in Studio are indeed multithreaded, like the batch tasks where Studio does use more CPU power but if you try to open extremely large files then there can be issues.

Why do you think 2021 will help? Can you be more specific about the improvements?  What about the memory limitation related to the 32 bit version?  Won't 2021 need more memory?  I've never heard of a software upgrade that is smaller.

The Editor view includes significant performance improvements that translate into:

 faster processing of long documents

 faster selection of multiple segments

 faster segment merging and splitting

 faster document alignment

It's not difficult to do what you have suggested, but simply doing that will not make Studio faster.  It will only allow it to use more memory.  To really optimise Studio the code needs optimising first and these improvements can be obtained while on 32-bit.  The development teams are working on these optimisations but they are not trivial or they would have been completed a long time ago.  Moving to 64-bit may help in some situations when processing very large files, but we really need to address a lot more than this before making this change.

I can't really tell you more than this, as this is all I have gathered from discussions with the teams.  But for sure nobody other than the development team really knows what's involved here and trivialising it doesn't really help anyone.

What is difficult for me to understand is that my issues with slow performance seemed to occur only after the last Windows update. I'm wondering what Microsoft might have changed that would cause Studio to slow down.

I'm not talking about problems with enormous files, which I can understand, but with just scrolling in 2000 word files..
