Keeping Word document comments (source doc) as is in the target

Hi!

When I create a Studio project with the Extract comments box left unchecked, the comments are not reproduced in the target file. Is that normal? It seems to me that it should work like hidden text : it is not extracted but it is left as is in the target. Thank you!

Trados Studio Project Settings dialog box with 'Extract comments for translation' unchecked and 'Retain Studio target comments in target file' checked under Comments section.

  • I assume you are working with a version of Studio that is older then 2019?

Reason for this is because the later versions have this option: Retain Studio Target Comments in Target File

Trados Studio screenshot showing Comments options with 'Extract comments for translation' unchecked and 'Retain Studio target comments in target file' checked.

To give some definition around these options:

    • Select Extract comments for translation to make comments translatable. Usually, comments are not translated, so, if this the case, leave this option disabled.
    • Select Retain Studio target comments in target file to make comments available for consultation in the target file.
Note: Source comments are not kept in the source file when you save it with the Save Source As option, unless you select Extract comment for translation.
I hope this helps give clarity
