Problem with Sync Center - Deleting file-based TMs

I'm using Studio 2021 Professional - currently running  "SDL Trados Studio 2021 SR1 - 16.1.3.4096" (due to teleworking and having to be connected via a VPN) with file-based TMs.

We are using Windows 10 with Sync Center and without warning while working in Studio 2021 on two occasions in the last 10 days I have suddenly received the message that:

Error message in Trados Studio 2021 indicating a missing translation memory or TM container that may have been deleted.

and the TM files (previously around 200-250 Mb) shows as 0 Bytes.

The log file shows:

ERROR [2022-02-08 10:02:04,770] Sdl.TranslationStudio.Editor.Translation.TranslationMemorySegmentSearch - The translation memory or TM container appears to be missing and may have been deleted.
Sdl.LanguagePlatform.Core.LanguagePlatformException: The translation memory or TM container appears to be missing and may have been deleted.
at Sdl.LanguagePlatform.TranslationMemoryApi.FileBasedTranslationMemoryLanguageDirection.SearchTranslationUnitsMasked(SearchSettings settings, SubsegmentSearchSettings subsegmentSettings, SubsegmentSearchCondition condition, TranslationUnit[] translationUnits, Boolean[] mask)

I have been able to rebuild the TMs from backups and from the bilingual files of any projects since the previous backup, but obviously I'd rather be translating than having to restore my TMs the whole time. Part of the problem might be also due to the TM files being mapped to a network drive rather than really being on the C: drive (they only show there as aliases) and issues with VPN stability. With the setup I have, I have abandoned UPlift to avoid the TMs bloating in size (e.g. up to 450-550 Mb), and notice that in order to "upgrade" TMs I have to move a copy to another drive to perform that.

Are there are cast iron cert tips to help me get out of these issues?

  • To expand on the diskspace issue, we have our laptops set up in such a way that the storage space of the "Documents" folder and folders underneath is limited to a certain number of gigabytes. A problem this causes is that if you go over the hard limit amount, then it refuses to save the file and the version saved then has a 0 Kb size. Large multifile projects and Termbases and TMs stored in subfolders therefore can quickly be corrupted in this way. The solution has been to set aside a certain partition of the hard drive as a local non-mirrored drive, so that it is not dependent on the whims of the VPN connection or subject to the amount of storage space I am allowed in Documents. The problem is only really an issue if you use Sync Center in combination with file-based TMs and TBs.

For this reason any TM/TB reorganisation should never be conducted on a live TM/TB that is stored within a synced directory (even if laziness makes it tempting to do so!)
