.mif format file in Studio 2021 - file does not open in project, is Adobe FrameMaker mandatory?

Hello,

I know someone has already discussed the issue for v2019 in another community topoic,

but I am afraid ran into the same issue again today with Studio 2021, file type is enabled ...as in screenshot.

is there a munite solution before I ask client to change file type?

or is FrameMaker or Adobe product mandatory to process these types?

many thanks for your help in adnavance

Sara

No, Adobe Framemaker is not mandatory.  Maybe you need to use this setting?

Trados Studio options menu with Adobe FrameMaker 8-2020 MIF v2 selected, showing various processing settings such as 'Process unsupported file versions' and 'Process reference pages'.

  • Thank you so much Paul, I really appreciated it.

I ticked the option (as in screenshot) and relaunched Studio,

but when I tried to convert the file to the sdlxliff with right click or newly load the file, it still looked like this..? (or maybe restarting the computer?)

    thank you so much,

  • I wonder if your default project template is different?  Can you make sure that the default also has this option set?

    File -> Setup

If the problem is still there would you be able to share the file with me?  At least that way we could rule out a file problem.

  • Open the mif file in a text editor like Notepad++ and tell us the mif version stated there. Thanks.

many thanks for reaching out, it said

  • OK, this comes to my mind,

if notepad can read these files - how about if I simply save them as .txt, and after translation just change the identifier back to .mif again - could this be the answer? that saves my day! thank you so much!

  • So this is the culprit. Simply ask the customer to create mif files in the current version. MIF7 is not supported by Studio and on top it does not support Unicode, so using this for translation in 21st century isn't a good idea.

  • Well, you could go that way. But this would involve defining dozens of tags, which is unnecessary, as you can simply use current mif version.

  • Hi there, can I Save As *.mif in Trados? It seems not possible though:

  • No, because your source format was NOT mif. You used txlf as source, so this is the format you can create as target. Your mif can only be created in the tool, which converted it from the source.
