Change autosave path?

Hi,

Is it possible to change the autosave path? It currently automatically points to \...\documents, which is a folder that is automatically monitored by onedrive (which setting I would prefer to keep), but the result is that onedrive keeps filling up with autosaves (which it also automatically deletes, which is good). It does not actually seem to be affecting the speed of my internet connection or system and is not causing errors, but I would prefer to point everything in studio to the same place (i.e. not under documents).

Thanks,

Olly

It means copying the full path, this one: C:\Users\%username%\Documents\Studio 2021\Autosave.

You can do it like this:

Screenshot of a file explorer window with the 'Studio 2021' folder open, showing the 'Copy path' option highlighted in the context menu and the 'AutoSave' folder selected.

And paste it (Ctrl+V) in a different folder, that you know is local and not linked to a cloud drive.

    Hope it helps?

  • Hi  : is it possible to change the default AutoSave path? You seem to say it is possible ("It means copying the full path, this one: C:\Users\%username%\Documents\Studio 2021\Autosave. And paste it (Ctrl+V) in a different folder, that you know is local and not linked to a cloud drive.") but you never say where to paste it. Do you have to paste it an .xml file? A response would really be appreciated. For reasons I won't explain, we cannot unsynch the AutoSave default folder from the cloud, so changing the default path would be our only solution. Thank you!

  • Here is the answer our team got from RWS support:

"There is currently no option to change the Autosave folder path.

We raised a request 00872042 for the dev team to change this path and it will be fixed within the next week for the Trados Studio 2024 upcoming CU1 update.

We also asked for this to be included in Trados Studio 2022 but we do not have a timeline available now.

Let me know if this helps or if you require further assistance."

  • Yes, I would like some assistance on this issue because Studio crashes EVERY time I hit CTRL+S to save a project and the RWS response to this issue (reported many times by many people) is that it is other peoples' fault (i.e. Microsoft or Google), although it only suddenly started happening to me today. I have tried the option "Always keep on this device" for the Autosave folder, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. The only other suggestion made in the thread mentioned by Ms Nagy is to remove "Documents" entirely from One Drive and this is not feasible. I do have thousands of other files in there that are nothing to do with Trados that I need to sync! So that option is simply ridiculous. I'm running Studio 2022, so the CU1 update will not help me.

  • The only solution we found was to deactivate AutoSave (File, Options, Editor), close Studio and then delete the AutoSave folder in OneDrive. When you reopen Studio, it shouldn't crash anymore when you do Ctrl + S. It then becomes even more important to do Ctrl + S often and to always confirm your segments because you won't have AutoSave files anymore.

  • That's not really a solution is it? That's just avoiding the problem. It's like saying: Oh my car has a flat tyre and cannot be driven safely. I know, I'll just not drive my car any more!

  •

Remove the Studio folder from OneDrive and all problems will be gone.

I guess the solutions are these:

    1. upgrade to 2024
    2. wait for the work that is planned for 2022
    3. put a patch on your flat tyre and drive home

No amount of complaining will speed this up I'm afraid.  I wish we did have a magic wand but we don't.

  • Our conclusion here was that we are ourselves the Autosave function, since we hit Ctrl + S pretty much after each change we make in a document. So, for us, no need so far to have the Autosave function enabled, we'll wait for the fix in Trados 2024.

We also have a colleague who absolutely never hits Ctrl + S, so having the Autosave function enabled is fine for her.

  • What interests me is why this problem has suddenly raised its ugly head on my system. Although I'm aware that others have struggled with the issue in the past, I never did until yesterday. In all that time (the roughly 3 years that I've had Studio 2022) I have never changed any settings in this respect. Autosave is on and the directory was a subdirectory that was backed up on OneDrive. It never seemed to care before and then suddenly - major issue! No updates, no changes. Weird.
