How to automatically convert nbsp to corresponding XML Tag

Hello, 
 I'm translating (our own) xml-based documents (adapted file type defintition) and we have a lot of <nbsp> tags in the documents. I find it tiresome to insert the tags as such with the STRG + , shortcut because in some segments we have a lot of tags so it's time-consuming to select the correct ones. I'd rather use the odd shortcut while typing - but then of course Trados complains I have ommitted a tag and also the TM is not "clean" when I mix these two (tags and symbols). 
 I there a way to convert the nbsp to the tag "on the fly" while typing by using a sort auto-correction?

CTRL+SHIFT+SPACE enters a non-breaking space, but not a tag. I think the solution here could be to un-escape the &nbsp; in the xml. There would be no check whether the nbsp gets entered into the translation though. 
 When a segement is extremely taggy I sometimes find it easiest to copy source to target to get all the tags and then fill in the words in between, or use MT that gets all the tags across and then correct as needed.
