PO files - buttons for RTL and LTR characters do not work

When translating a PO file to Arabic with Trados Studio 2021 we are not able to insert RTL and LTR control characters via the buttons on the "Advanced" tab. We have to copy and paste them from somewhere else. For Word files it works fine. Could this be a bug?

It's not a bug as I don't think this was ever available or tested.  But I think it might be something we should do.  I have logged this with support to investigate as I don't know enough about the PO filetype to know whether or not BiDi markers can be supported for this fietype.  It feels to me as though it should because you do need to have control over directionality just to translate content correctly.

In the meantime I also tested the only appstore plugin we have for PO files, in Trados Studio 2019, and this also had this limitation.  I'm not sure that proves anything so I'll update this post once I hear back from the support team.
