Garbage in Save Target XML files

I have a series of XML files that open file in Trados Studio. But when I save as target it saves the file with markup garbage text. Here is a sample:

[vc_row layout="normal" mp4="" webm="" video_overlay="rgba(0,0,0,0.45)" video_placeholder=""][vc_column][layerslider_vc id="34"][vc_empty_space height="20px"][vc_column_text]

These files are to be imported into Wordpress, but as is they do not import correctly. How do I save the files without the markup garbage? Thanks in advance for your help.

PS I tried to use difference encoding formats but the result is the same every time.

  • Well, it's not garbage and most processers should be able to interpret this correctly. But, if you want help with this it would be useful if you shared a small snippet of code (not a screenshot!) of the source file itself. Then we "might" be able to help.

  • I'm happy to try and help you here, but if you provided a fully formed xml file snippet which I could simply open and test you are more likely to get that help... probably my bad as I assumed you would have done that so I should have been more explicit. If you just provide a bit of code that looks as though it might have started from somewhere inside a CDATA section then I now have to spend time trying to create a fully formed XML file with your snippet just to test and I might do something that behaves in a different way than yours.

It also means that as I now have to spend time on this it goes further down my own priorities as I don't have the luxury of spending a lot of time to try and help.

  • Hi Paul, I am not sure what you meant by snippet. I am attaching one of the XML files. I am also not sure what you mean by spending time and pushing back. I sent this 8 days ago and so far I am not getting help. This ahs become an urgent matter and I would appreciate help. Thanks in advance.

  • I am also not sure what you mean by spending time and pushing back.

In order to test something for you when you request help anyone looking at this will have to create a well formed xml file to test. You only gave a snippet from the middle of the file and even that didn't have a proper start and end. So if I (for example) try to work with this I first have to work through it to try and create a proper well formed xml file andthen test. And if I do that it might not be the same situation you find yourself in.

The community is not a place for guaranteed support. If you want that you should purchase a support contract. Otherwise you are reliant on the goodwill of others and this includes RWS staff who do try to help and you may not have noticed but often do this in their own time outside of their normal working hours. I was on leave for 4-days in this thread and I imagine the only reason you didn't get more help is because of the effort involved in trying to help you.

That's what I meant. You need to make it easy for people to take time out of their own day to help you.

This ahs become an urgent matter and I would appreciate help.

    Guaranteed support...

Anyway. I think your problem is related to the fact that these Wordpress files are not really very easy to handle. The CDATA sections are comprised of plain text and html... for example:

Screenshot of XML code snippet with CDATA section containing mixed text and HTML code.

It starts with text, then some html, then text etc. If you used the html embedded content processor, and I imagine you did, then the html entity conversion will be handled as you expect. But the txt will not, so you end up with this:

Screenshot of XML code snippet with CDATA section showing HTML entity conversion.

I tried to use difference encoding formats but the result is the same every time.

Yes, and this is because the problem is not encoding. It's not garbage they are just html entities. If Wordpress cannot handle this then you need to tackle the files a different way. So I used the txt embedded content processor instead of the html and created my own rules. With the sample you gave me it was fairly straightforward and I can achieve this sort of thing in the editor (pseudo-ranslated):

Screenshot of Trados Studio editor with pseudo-translated text and custom rules applied.

Then when I save the target file I see this:

Screenshot of XML code snippet with CDATA section and custom parser rule applied.

Apart from the nonsense German I think it's what you wanted?

    So I used this...

Simple parser rule for my test:

Screenshot of Trados Studio parser settings highlighting the 'content:encoded' rule as always translatable.

Processed the embedded content with a custom txt filetype called DG_1:

Screenshot of Trados Studio embedded content settings with 'DG_1' selected for processing CDATA content.

Custom filetype had one simple rule for my test:

Screenshot of Trados Studio embedded content processors with a custom rule for plain text.

I filtered out the script in the file like this with a simple regex:

Screenshot of Trados Studio advanced display filter with a search for specific text within tags.

And pseudo-translated, then saved the target.

    I hope that helps?

  • Thanks Paul, can you send me the settings for this file type so I can import them. I don't know how to create this DG file type. If you opened up the XML file, how does it recognize it as a DG file type?

  • Just go to the Embedded Content processors as I showed in the screenshot, copy the "Plain Text" and rename the copy as DG_1. Then just use that embedded content processor to handle the embedded content... also in my screenshot.

If I send you my filetype settings you probably still won't know what to do with them based on your reply. So I think it makes sense for you to create this yourself. I only used one very simple rule for this anyway so I'm pretty sure that you'll have to enhance it for your real files.

  • Thanks for your help Paul. I opted for a simpler solution-using simple search and replace in Notepad to replace the HTML entities with the matching characters. It works so we will leave this for a future time.

I would like to say however that as Wordpress is the number 1 CMS in the world, it would behoove Trados to have an out-of-the box filetype which does not need a Paul Filkin to oversee the localization process. In the Trados I am using, there are about 10 or more XML filetypes. I would love to know how I can get Trados to recognize the WP XML files and do the parsing with no customized configuration required. Thanks again.

I think there are couple of things to take from this comment. First of all it doesn't take a "Paul Filkin" or any specific person to handle this. The solution I provided is out of the box basic functionality available to anyone who knows how to create custom XML files in Trados Studio. You can even see from my response that there was nothing difficult or complicated to achieve this.

I'd also note that the localization format from Wordpress, which is also problematic, is XLIFF and not XML. The files you are handling look like their backup XML format which is a sort of exported RSS feed not designed for localization at all.

I am always amazed by comments like this where you don't think Wordpress should do something about their localization capabilities. Wordpress is one of the largest platforms in the world... I won't use the term CMS because I think this is too much of a stretch for me... and yet they still don't support localization properly. Anyone looking for a serious CMS platform for a multilingual environment shouldn't choose Wordpress in my opinion.

Notwithstanding all of this, given the array of files we see from Wordpress all of which normally present a problem because of their lazy approach to managing content for localization it may well be that we could try to resolve this on our side and try to accommodate their crap for less technical users. So... if you, or anyone else, can provide a specification for a Wordpress XML and XLIFF, then I will commit to developing filetypes to support them via the appstore. I think that's a fair compromise... I could probably do it, but instead of me digging around to find out how these files should be handled, you do that bit and we'll create the filetypes and provide them for free.
