Unable to extract Excel series names displayed in chart legends

I’m having a hard time trying to translate in Trados some Excel charts in which the series entries of the chart legends have been typed in manually between double quotes in the <Select Data Source> dialog box (i.e. they are not referenced to another cell within the spreadsheet).

I’m aware that I can type them in manually as well, but it is a series of rather long charts, and many documents, and my aim is to process them all with Trados together with the rest of the information from this same client.

Anybody knows if there is a specific setting for this? I’ve searched over the Internet, and the forum, but couldn’t find any answers.

I would really appreciate the help!

This is a simplified, sample chart of what I need to translate:

Bar chart titled 'Categor a de documentos' with horizontal bars representing documents at 30 days, 7 days, and 1 day intervals for months Jan, Feb, and Mar.

And what I get in Trados:

Trados Studio interface showing the translation of 'Categor a de documentos' and 'Fuente: XX' but missing the series entries from the Excel chart.

As you can see the series have not been extracted for translation.

I'm sure there must be a setting that I'm not finding how to configure. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I'm also attaching an excel with this example,

Regards,

Claudia

  • any more ideas are welcomed!!!

Unfortunately the only way Trados Studio handles these is if the name of the series in your chart is derived from a cell.  I ran three tests.

Default : where I just create the graph a don't rename the series:

Screenshot of Trados Studio showing a chart with series named by default, Edit Series dialog box open with series name field empty.

Renamed as text : where I just typed in whatever I wanted the series to be called:

Screenshot of Trados Studio showing a chart with series manually renamed as text, Edit Series dialog box open with series name field showing 'Test series 1'.

Derived from cell reference : where I entered the names into a cell in the spreadsheet and then referenced them in the series:

Screenshot of Trados Studio showing a chart with series named by cell reference, Edit Series dialog box open with series name field showing '=Derived from ref cell!$B$6'.

The only one that works, obviously, is the last one and this is because it's just extracting the cell content for translation and this will automatically be reflected in the chart in the target languages when you save your target files.

Screenshot of Trados Studio preview window displaying a list of chart series names including 'Default', 'Renamed as text', and 'Derived from cell' with corresponding translation status.

Trados Studio ignores all other data. So your best bet, if you can, is to try and encourage your client to use references for these values instead of manually typing in the names.

I will log an enhancement request for this because I think we should extract this info for translation.
