To recreate issue:
1-Open multiple files in editor
2-Insert a comment
3-Save
4-Get "Object reference not set to an instance of an object. "
The work around is to delete the comments but seriously, this is a bug in my opinion.

Any way to save AND keep the comments?
This doesn't happen with the current supported versions of the software. We won't make any fixes to older and non-supported versions of the software. So... one possible solution is to take advantage of the paid service Kelly offered as he has developed a plugin to help resolve this problem. BUT... given you can delete the comments in one click out of the box:
And you can also export your comments using the Comments View plugin for 2017 on the appstore:
