TM not working and project/TM setting errors : "object reference not set to an instance of an object"

Hi everyone,

I have Trados Studio 2021 and I have been having issues with the TM settings. Today, I received a translation via groupshare and when I opened it in Trados, the TM was not working. The following message appeared instead of showing me potential matches: "no matches found or no lookup performed".

I decided to go check the project settings to make sure that the TM was enabled.

Under All pair languages, it is enabled, but there is definitely something wrong there... At the bottom, I have the following warning message: "You have set up different translation memories or automated translation providers for certain language pairs", and then when I try to select the TM to be able to remove it and re-add, the following error message appears: "object reference not set to an instance of an object."

Under my pair of languages (here Swiss German to Swiss French), I am not able to un-check the box "use different translation providers for this language pair". And if I try again to select the TM, the error message from earlier appears again: "object reference not set to an instance of an object."

Does anyone have any idea on how to solve this issue?

In parallel, I work on a file-based project that I created myself with a TM from German (Germany) to French (Belgium). I also do not see any results from the TM when translating, but when I go in settings, I do not have any of the other error messages and under the pair of languages the box "use different translation providers for this language pair" is unchecked.

  • I would guess so, especially as I was recommended to download the latest version of Trados Studio, and everything worked fine until about a week ago when I was suddenly disconnected from GroupShare. After reconnecting, I started having some issues with the TM (results were no longer shown). It started working again when I unticked the button use different translation providers for this language pair for another file-based project in the project settings. But somehow today, I started having issues again and it got really worse.

  • You may not have any TMs added both in All language pairs AND in a specific language pair. ALL TMs must be specified either in All language pairs OR (exclusive) in a specific language pair. Otherwise it will not work. Nothing has changed so far, it was always this way.

    First, please check, if your Studio is really compatible with customers Group Share. Simply ask for the necessary version.

    If your Studio is compatible and you have problems, recreate the corresponding projects. Use a completely fresh project template for this, not any from the past.

    All this assumes of course, that your Internet connection is stable and fast and no firewall is interfering.
