Which file is being translated?

Hi!

I often work with project files containing lots of smaller files. I usually open them all in one go to translate them in the editor view.

Unfortunately, there are files Trados cannot display a preview for. In these cases, I need to go back to the actual source file and open it to check potentially strange segments. But it's hard to tell those files appart and find the right one right away, so I generally lose quite some time opening and closing the source files to find the right one.

I'm looking for a quick and easy way to see to which file the one segment I am working on actually belongs.

Do you have a tip & trick for me?

  • Hi ,

The best way to identify what file you are working on, including merged documents (containing multiple files) or a virtually merged files (selected and opened multiple files in the editor as one document) is as  pointed out, via the navigation view.

The navigation view is your friend in this case and can be used to navigate through the documents by clicking on the nodes.  It also automatically synchronizes and navigates to the node in the tree as you are working through the document...

Additionally, you can display the file tags in the editor view: Ribbon->View->Options->(show/hide) file tags.

    Dear Patrick Andrew,

Allow me to re-activate this thread, as I am in the same boat as Ingrid and, after carefully reading the various answers, I still do not see a solution. My current workaround is to use the Agent Ransack utility and let it search through the project folder. There, I can copy the filename from the search results.

The only difference with Ingrid is that I need not only to know the file the segment belongs to, but also to be able to copy the file name. This information is important when submitting queries to the client.

    • Navigation view

As someone wrote, the sync does not work reliably. It seems to work well in the direction Navigation/file → segment, but not the other way round, at least not with the project I currently have opened. A shame, as the copy function is enabled in this pane.

    • Segment Information Viewer (add-on)

This would have been the perfect solution. Unfortunately, the add-on does not appear any more in the AppStore – even after setting up the private store to avoid the current problems with the public store. Besides, someone in the thread reports that the filename is not displayed in the latest version.

    • Show file tags

This does the trick: the filename appears just a few lines above the segment I want to report to the client. However, there seems to be no way to copy this information into the clipboard. But I may be wrong, feel free to correct me.

As you can see, there is always a little something missing in each of these three solutions to get the filename into the clipboard. So meanwhile, digging in the project folder still seems to be the only solution – not always practical when the searched source text appears several times in the project.
