Studio crash - sometimes message, sometimes not

Hello all,

I know many of posted about this, and I'm going to join in the topic.

Computer Specs:
Computer 1: Windows 10, 8 GB RAM; Versions of Studio tested: 2017 SR1 - 14.1.10018.54792, Studio 2019 (I no longer have the version number, as I uninstalled it). This is my normal computer, so there are many other programs open at the same time. Files/Studio project are located on C: drive.
Computer 2: Windows 10, 32 GB RAM; Versions of Studio tested: 2017 SR1 - 14.1.10018.54792, Studio 2021 SR2 - 16.2.10.9305. I am only using this computer for Studio (nothing else is open, such as Email, Chrome). Only one version of Studio is open at one time - during testing the only 'program open' was Studio. Use the files that are on Computer 1, through folder sharing.

File Specs:
Mac InDesign v.15.1
IDML file size: 4.9MB
Bilingual file size (English only - i.e target translations are all empty: 8.0MB
Bilingual file size (example: English and Polish: 9.5MB)
Word count: 13625. Many tags: Bold, italic, superscript, specific font color, index markers, anchor refs.
I do have a large Multiterm termbase (42 languages,1009 entries per language), but Computer 2 does not have Multiterm 2019 installed. - it does have latest version of Multiterm 2017.

We have done some internal testing and here is what we have found:
Computer 1: a lot of crashes, if you do not continually 'save' (continually = every 3 or 4 changes). Both versions. Stopped testing on this computer.
Computer 2: ability to make about 60 changes, before Studio crashes. Same in both Studio versions. Strongly believe the size of RAM is a key factor.

When these crashes happen:
It depends on the complexity of the file - if it's a standard Word/Excel file, I have not had it crash as much. It could be restricted to IDML? That's the majority of what I work with - IDML with many tags.
Many times it's going through the messages after we 'Verify'. Please note, I have a lot of things I use Studio for, in the QA verification. In the EN-PL file, there are 205 messages for QA. I place my cursor in the error messages window, and use my down arrow to go through them - I keep my eyes on the bottom right corner of the screen, as that's where the segments typically appear, in my view. This allows me to go rather quickly.
At times, even when the file has saved, I can go through about 50-60 comments, and then it crashes. At first, I thought it was because I wasn't saving often, but now, I'm wondering if it's still a RAM issue. Is there guidance to how much RAM is good to have in a computer?
It's also happened when I have accidently selected too much text, or selected text and I only wanted to insert the cursor and I hit Escape.

It would be great if someone could help possibly identify any other things to try to avoid the crashes?

Thank you in advance,

Mindy

  • Well, this is indeed more than strange. In my case all files are stored on a NAS and I use Studio 2021 with more or less no crashes on huge files (up to 50,000 words or sometimes more) with several termbases per project. However my termbases are mostly bilingual or trilngual, though having often more than 10,000 entries.

I have two PCs, on which Studio runs without problems. The desktop is a powerful one, but my laptop is not so powerful. It is only i7 10th generation with 16 GB RAM. This is though more than enough for Studio. So I would assume, there is another software installed on your machine and interfering with Studio. Do you possibly have another PC to test?
