  • Hi

The easiest way to convert an SDLXLIFF to TMX format is the following:

In the Translation Memories View, create a new translation memory with the matching language pair of the SDLXLIFF and save it to a place you know you can find it.

Then, also in the Translation Memories View, highlight your newly created translation memory in the Translation Memories pane and select 'Import' either on the top toolbar or via left-click.

In the 'wizard' that opens, click 'Add Files...' and navigate to where your SDLXLIFF is (if you need more explanation on how to find it, please say).

Double-click the SDLXLIFF (or left-click and select 'Open') to import the SDLXLIFF into the translation memory (extension .sdltm).

Click 'Next' and then select the segments confirmation level/s if they're not default. Then click 'Next'.

Then you have a window that gives you various import options. As you're working with a new translation memory (TM) you can leave these 'as is' unless there's anything you wish to refine.

When the wizard has finished running, click 'Close'.

Then, go to your newly created TM to which you've imported your SDLXLIFF and, again, highlight your newly created translation memory in the Translation Memories pane and select 'Export' either on the top toolbar or via left-click.

In the Export Options wizard that opens, use Browse to navigate to where you want to save it and give your TMX a name. Example as follows:

    Then click 'Finish'.

Hope this is enough information. Let me know if not.

    All the best,

  • Hi,

I had a feeling that by using this method not all segments (e.g. placeables) were imported into the TM.

    Thank you

Probably not as these sort of things are not needed by Studio since the replacement is driven from the source document.  If you want a TMX that contains exactly what was in your file then you need to convert the sdlxliff itself.  There are some apps that will do this for you, but they may not be available on the appstore yet.  I'll try to get these looked at today and make them available on the Private AppStore.

If you use Trados Studio 2021 or 2022 then you'll be able to get them.

The app you want is SDLXLIFF2Tmx and it is available for the 2021 and 2022 versions of Trados Studio:

  • Thank you Paul for your answer.

I'm using Trados Studio 2019 and already tried the SDLXLIFF2Tmx app. It's unfortunately unable to convert all SDLXLIFF files. It often creates incomplete unusable TMX files.

Is this the only app that allows that type of conversion?

    Thanks

That's interesting... I've never had such a problem with this app.  I'd be interested in the files you are converting.  I imagine  might be interested as well.

On other apps... you could try the SDLXLIFF to Legacy Converter as this has a TMX option:
