Computer doesn’t recognize Trados 2022 file formats – after assigning them, it only opens the program instead of the file itself

Hi! I was wondering if anybody else has had this issue & solved it or if someone has a solution for me.

I was using Trados Studio 2017 until early June 2022 when I upgraded to the 2022 suite (Trados Studio 2022 Freelance - 17.0.0.11594) and simultaneously deleted the 2017 suite from my laptop (the same laptop I’ve had before, on Windows 10 OS). Ever since the upgrade however, I haven’t been able to open Trados files (sdlxliff, sdlproj, sdlppx, sdltm, etc.) via double-click. I can only open them from within the Trados Studio program. The first thing I did was right-click on one of the Trados files in my Windows Explorer and go to „Open with …“ and select „SDLTradosStudio.exe“ from my programs folder. However now, whenever I double-click that file type, my laptop only opens the program Trados Studio instead of the file itself.

Can anybody help me figure out what I need to do in order to be able to open Trados files by double-clicking on them? That would be so much more efficient.

Thank you in advance!

Anita

If repairing Trados Studio 2022 doesn't fix it then I would suggest working a different way.  Open the files from Trados Studio instead.  Working your way can lead to problems as you may be creating projects within projects every time you double click on a file... unless of course it's only the sdlproj you are double-clicking?

The safest way to work is to open projects from the projects view in Trados.  Open new packages from the Open Package menu.

  • Thank you for your answer, Paul! I’m not sure what you mean by “repaiging Trados Studio 2022” in this case. How would I do that?

But yes, that’s what I’ve been doing: opening Trados file from within Trados Studio. It is however much more time-consuming than just opening files via double-click. I’ve always done the double-click method with every Trados Studio version I’ve used and I’ve never had any issues with it. Sure, I can use this alternative method – and I have since I upgraded to the 2022 version. But my question was about how to assign the file types properly, so that I can open them via double-click as well. Just like with MS Word or Excel etc., you can open files from within the program or by doulbe-clicking. And I would like to have those same options back with Trados Studio.

I assume your OS is German. In the search pane enter "Systemsteuerung", chose "Programme und Feature" and select Trados Studio 2022, then click "Deinstallieren/Ändern" and chose "Repair":

Screenshot of the 'Programme und Features' window in German with Trados Studio 2022 selected. A dialog box asks 'Do you want to Uninstall or Repair the application?' with options to Uninstall or Repair.

Any please do not tell fairy tales here... Opening a file in Stuido from within the program is ages faster than a double click. If you double click the file, the Studio splash screen appears and it takes some seconds to open the file. On top of this, you need to open the file from the "Dateien" view in Studio, if you want to continue working on it. Double clicking a sdlxliff file creates a new project with this file and is NOT the way you should work with Studio.

  • Thank you for your explanation, Jerzyl However, I can’t see any repair feature in my OS. This is what it looks like for me:

Windows Settings screen showing 'Apps and Features' with Trados Studio 2022 selected and an uninstall option available.

If the only solution is to uninstall and reinstall Trados, I will do that, but I was hoping there was a different way.

And please don’t tell me how to work!! I’ve worked with different versions of Trados for about 15 years, in project management and as a freelance translator. I know exactly how it works (if it works properly). I know what you mean by it creating a new project when I just double-click on an .sdlxliff file, and that is not how I do things. However, I receive project packages quite often, and it is faster for me to double-click them to open them because I’m already in the respective folder than to go to “Open package“ in Trados Studio and then have to navigate to the location where I have saved the .sdlppx file. The same goes for .sdltm files when I want to create an export and so on and so on … So, as I said, I can use the other way, but I would like to have the option to do both, since there are situation where I much perfer the double-click.

So, please no discussion here about which way is better or faster. This is how it is for me. And I was simply asking for a way to have BOTH available.

Please try to follow my instruction and use Systemsteuerung, which is NOT what you show. And when you talk about "files", this does not mean packages. Opening packages via double click is indeed a convenient way to deal with them.

You could check the file extension assignment in your OS. This is possible via standard apps in your view.

  • Hi

The screen Jerzy showed you is the old-style 'Systemsteuerung' and I agree that it is not easy to find if one does not know how to get there.
The easiest way in my opinion is the following:
    - Hit Win + S on your keyboard
    - In the entry field type appwiz.cpl and hit the ENTER key
    - This will show up the mentioned screen, scroll down to 'Trados Studio 2022" and right-click
Windows control panel with 'Program deinstallieren oder ndern' at the top. Trados Studio 2022 is highlighted with 'Deinstallieren ndern' option visible.
    - Click on 'Deinstallieren/ändern"
    - Answer YES at the next prompt
    - Click on 'Repair' when you see this:
Dialog box asking 'Do you want to Uninstall or Repair the application?' with an arrow pointing to the 'Repair' button.
Studio will then be repaired, which only takes 1-2 minutes.
This process also reestablishes the links between file extensions such as SDLPPX, SDLPROJ, etc. to Studio 2022.

    Good luck.
    Walter

  • Ah, thank you both, Jerzy and Walter! I found it now & have performed the repair feature. I acutally worked for all file types (.sdlproj, .sdlppx, .sdltm, etc.), EXCEPT for .sdlxliff files.

After doing the file exentesion assignemnt for .sdlxliff, double-clicking on any of those files still only opens the PROGRAM Trados Studio (and if it’s already open, it opens another window) instead of the .sdlxliff file that I was actually trying to open.

I tried the repair feature again, but no changes. All Trados-file types work now via double-click, except for .sdlxliff.

  • In this case, right-click on any of your SDLXLIFF files and select 'Eigenschaften'. You will see that this filetype is opened by default in Studio 2022:
Properties window showing SDLXLIFF file type with 'Open with: Trados Studio' selected and an 'Change...' button highlighted.

Click on 'Ändern' and then on the Trados Studio icon with the green colour (2021).
Open with selection window with Trados Studio 2021 icon highlighted in green among other application options.

  • Unfortunately, I don’t have the 2021 version. I jumped from 2017 to 2022 and uninstalled 2017 right after installing 2022. So, 2022 is the only Trados version I have on my laptop at the.

  • This shouldn't make any difference. Do you have memoQ on your PC? If so, make sure it did not "capture" files from Trados, what memoQ gladly does.

You can also try to download the last installer from RWS page and run it via right clicking and "Als Administrator ausführen". No uninstall necessary, you just run the installation over the existing one. Restart your PC. This should help.

  • No, I don’t have memoQ or any other translation software on my laptop.

By the last installer, do you mean this?

I am not sure I understand what behavior you would like. It is normal that double-clicking a SDLXLIFF file opens Studio so that you can work on this file.
What else would you want it to do? What do you mean by 'it opens the PROGRAM; Studio .... instead of the SDLXLIFF file'?
How else do you want to open a SDLXLIFF file?
