TM does not save changes in language resources

I've just installed Trados Studio 2022 - 17.0.2.11672

I'm trying to optimize TM segmentation settings in order to translate a set of financial statements with many abbreviations, so I added abbreviations and changed segmentation rules after checking the segmentation of the files

Each time I was prompted to reindex the TM and everything was OK

After a few changes I'm no longer prompted to reindex the TM and any addition to abbreviations and segmentation rules is lost when I close and reopen the TM

I had to create a resource template, export the content of the TM, create a new TM based on the resource template, and import the content of the TM, reorganize it, and then it was OK

I have tried to reproduce this and I can't.

    After a few changes

Can you elaborate on what this means?  I did this:

    1. I added 3 abbreviations and changed a couple of segmentation rules
    2. I was promoted to reindex so I reindexed
    3. I added some more abbreviations and a couple of segmentation rules
    4. I was promoted to reindex so I reindexed
    5. I added some more abbreviations and a couple of segmentation rules
    6. I was promoted to reindex so I reindexed
    7. I added some more abbreviations and a couple of segmentation rules
    8. I was promoted to reindex so I reindexed

I haven't lost anything.  Perhaps you can give me the steps to do exactly what you are doing, and maybe also point out anything important you think may help such as the location of the TMs for example, or if they are being backed up because they sit on a shared drive maybe?

  • Hi Paul,

I did exactly what you have done

I added abbreviations and changed a couple of segmentation rules several times

    Everything was OK

The last time I added abbreviations I was no longer promoted to reindex and the new changes were lost (the previous ones were not lost)

The TM is located in D: and is synched with google drive (not in real time, I synch manually every few hours), can this be the reason of the issue?

However, after a full Trados reset, which I performed in relation to the language template issue, it looks like I can again add abbreviations. I don't know if it works thanks to to the reset or for other reasons.

Maybe not specifically... but when you do this the TM will synch to Google drive every time a change is made that depending on the connection speed at the time things may or may not work perfectly well, especially if you are quick and continue making or changes before things completed.  This is one way TMs get corrupted because they are built for this.  They are file-based TMs so better to back up when you are not using them, or use a true server/cloud TM.

  • I noticed a few months ago that real time synch with Google Drive could be a problem so I disabled it.

    That's what I tried now:

I made some changes to TM settings and everything was OK (prompt for reindex, changes are retained)

I have closed Trados and made a copy of the TM to another directory

I enabled Google Drive synch (with Trados closed)

    The files were backed up

I disabled Google drive synch, reopened Trados

I tried to change TM settings (no prompt for reindex, changes are lost)

OK, so I think that something changed in the TM after it was backed up and Trados does not like this, but I can use the copy of the TM that was not backed up. I try to open it and the changes are lost in that, too! I cannot understand why!

Can you reproduce this entire scenario if you don't work with Google Drive at all?

  • Now I've removed my Trados project directory from Google Drive settings. It is no longer backed up by Google Drive

I've re-created my menory exporting to TMX, creating a new empty memory, reimporting the TMX and reorganizing (this is the only method I've found to be able to change TM settings)

I've made some changes. Everything is OK (prompt to reindex, changes are saved)

Then I've used Cobian Reflector to make a backup of the same directory on my local NAS.

Cobian Reflector makes no real time backup. I just open the program (with Trados closed), run the backup, and close the program.

Then I reopen Trados, try to make a change, but no prompt to reindex and changes are not saved.

Is this an issue with the file attributes changed by the backup programs?
