My TM won't update itself

So I tried reading the documentation provided with Studio and I've tried asking people on-line and the only answer I get is always the same: if you want your TM to update itself automatically, you just go to Project Settings > Language Pairs > All Language Pairs > Translation Memory and Automated Translation and you tick the box marked "Update". But every time I go to check my TM I notice that it hasn't added a single new Translation Unit in over a month. I've even tried using Batch Tasks to manually update the Main Translation Memories and the Project Translation Memories. Nothing, it just won't add a single thing to my TM and now I'm afraid that if there's some problem with my computer or if I eventually need to move my files somewhere else, then all of the work I've put into my TM won't be there anymore.

Am I doing something wrong or is there some issue with my software? I'm using SDL Trados Studio 2014 Freelance on Windows 7 Home (64 bits).

While you work in the Editor, you see the TM content in the "TM Results" window just above. If you translate a segment, for example segment number 12, then confirm it by hitting CTRL-Enter so that the status icon changes to a green pencil with a little v, then move your cursor one row up to get back to segment 12, you should see this segment in your TM, along with the user name and timestamp on yellow background in the bottom right. If this doesn't happen, check again your settings (TM enabled and Update box checked in your Project settings).

If you translate a segment, for example segment number 12, then confirm it by hitting CTRL-Enter so that the status icon changes to a green pencil with a little v, then move your cursor one row up to get back to segment 12, you should see this segment in your TM, along with the user name and timestamp on yellow background in the bottom right. That's what weird. I confirm my translated segments (Ctrl+Enter), if I go back and click on a translated segment I get a source for the TM with the new translated segment (with the name "[NameoftheProject]_EN-PT (Project TM)" followed by the day and hour where that segment was added to the TM), but when I go back to the Translation Memory window, open up said TM... nothing. It's still hasn't gotten any of the new bits I've added for the past month.

Also, to clarify, it's not an EMPTY TM. It's already got 54 segments, so at some point I must have managed to save it. It just hasn't done the same in over a month.

Oh, I see, you use a project translation memory. In this case, when you confirm a segment, it gets written to your "Project TM" and not to your main TM, meaning all the segments you translated and confirmed are in your Project TM and not in your main TM. This explains why you can't see them in the TM view window.

They get transferred to your main TM only when you do "Batch Task - Finalize" or "Batch Task - Update Main Translation Memory". This is the way it works when one uses a Project TM.

Is there a specific reason why you need to use a Project TM? If not, I suggest that you prepare your future projects without a Project TM (which is the default). It will make your life much easier.

But if I open said Project TM on the TM view window, then it too doesn't show any of the new segments I've translated in the last month. Also, as I've mentioned before, trying to use Batch Task - Update Main Translation Memory (or even Update Main Translation Memory) does nothing for either of them. Both are still not showing the segments that I've been working on for the last month.

Additionally, going to "Project Settings > Language Pairs > All Language Pairs > Translation Memory and Automated Translation" and unticking the Project Translation (while leaving all the boxes ticked on the main TM) also does nothing. The segments still show up on TM results in the Editor window as being saved to the Project TM after I confirm them.

How did you check this? In the Translation Memory view, the TUs are sorted by chronological order of their creation. This means that if you want to see the latest additions, you need to scroll through all pages to get to the last one or you need to do a search on some text, which can take quite some time.

When you say that you can't find the segments you worked on last month, does this mean that you have been working an entire month on the same project? What about the segments you translated in other projects?

I suggest that you forget about this project and create a new one - preferably without a Project TM. To update your main TM, import all the SDLXLIFF files you have been translating to make sure it gets updated to the latest state, then use it for your future projects. Make sure that the TM has all 4 boxes enabled in your project settings and that you confirm your segments, then everything should work fine from there on.

I check by going to the Translation Memories window, opening the TM and scrolling down until the last one. So far, my main TM only has 50 segments and the Project Translation has 54 (though they both end on the same segment, so the Project TM has a few extra entries down the middle).

And no, the segments I translate from any new projects I create aren't added to my regular TM either. I can start a new project, translat a few segments, go on to check on my TM and I'm still at a 50 segments total. And yes, I checked on the Editor Window that they're being saved to the normal TM.

Try looking on the next page ;-) The default TM View shows 50 segments at a time. You can change this to a maximum of 200. But they are all in there, you just have to scroll through the pages with the navigation buttons for the TM.

To change the default go to File -> Options -> Translation Memories View

It's not enough to scroll down, you need to scroll through the pages as Paul explained.
An additional hint: if you right click on the name of your TM in the Translation Memories view and then on Settings, Studio will show you how many translation units are in your TM. You can also access this directly from your Project Settings.

Ah I see, that's the problem I was having. I assumed that, just like in the Editor Window, segments in the translation memory would just keep going down along the page and you'd just have to scroll to it, especially because of the aforementioned page with 54 entries. Anyway, turns out that everything is fine, thanks to both Mr. Blaser and Mr. Filkin for their assistance.

Hello there, I had the same problem for a few months and today I went for the first time on the SDL community and reading your comments and the trainer's made me have a good look at the problem. I tried everything mentioned and nothing worked and then I went into the translation memories view in Studio 14 and right at the top of the page in the Home section, fifth column, I realised there was a next page button which I clicked and there were my other TU from past jobs. Could be as simple as that with you. Try it ! Emmanuelle Gold
