translation memory upgrade files

When upgrading a translation memory, as far as I know, Trados creates 2 files: a .bak and a .log file that are automatically saved in the original folder. Stupid question but is it important to keep those files or is it okay to delete them, as maybe everything that got already saved in the .sdltm file? Because after upgrading the TMs a couple of times, my folder is starting to get overloaded with all those .bak and .log files so I wanted to know if it was save to delete them...
