I have just upgraded from Studio 2017 to 2022. When I use my file-based TMs created on my 2017 version now, I have an impression that I get fewer translation suggestions than before. Do TMs need some kind of additional upgrade?

Almost certainly you will find differences in segmentation due to changes in how segmentation is applied and also how some words are considered for a word count (hyphenated words etc.). TMs also need to be "upgraded" so you are using the latest rules, but this may still be the cause of some differences. I think the best approach is to try and identify where you see a difference by looking at texts where you know something has changed and look for obvious culprits... hyphenated words, placeables, numbers, units of measurement, alphanumerics etc.
I should have added that you need to look for this small orange triangle by the side of your TM in the Translation Memories View:
If you see that then it's telling you your TM needs to be "upgraded". To do that just right click on it once it's selected and choose upgrade from the menu:
The triangle is indeed there, thank you!
Great... the process will also enable you to receive fragment matches so that's something you should read up on.
