Trados Studio Manager View - Feedback Opportunity

Your opinion matters!

Join our development team on a one to one interview and tell us what the experience of working with projects and files in Trados Studio is really like.

Why?

In recent years Trados Studio has undergone many changes as our product teams endeavour to ensure that it's a tool that can meet the needs of all of our users.  This work never stops and more recently you may have noticed that we have introduced a new feature, still in Beta, that offers a combined view for projects and files:

Trados Studio interface showing the Manager View (Beta) with a 'Give feedback' window open on the left and a project with files listed in the main area. Confirmation statistics pie chart on the right.

If you haven't seen it yet, and if you use Trados Studio 2022, then you can enable it by using this slider you'll see at the top of Trados Studio:

Close-up of Trados Studio top menu with an arrow pointing to the 'Enable Manager View (Beta)' slider.

Once enabled you'll see a view similar to the one above and you'll have an opportunity to provide feedback using the "Give Feedback" window in the navigation pane on the left.

We have been receiving some feedback, but we'd really like to try and get some more detailed feedback on how this could be improved based on our users experience in working with it, and also in working with the standard Projects and Files views that have been available in Trados Studio since the original 2009 version.

OPPORTUNITY FOR ONE TO ONE INTERVIEWS CLOSED FOR THIS YEAR.  WE MAY RUN THIS AGAIN AFTER WE HAVE IMPLEMENTED THE VALUABLE FEEDBACK PROVIDED BY THOSE OF YOU WHO WERE KIND ENOUGH TO VOLUNTEER YOUR TIME AND SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE.

FEEL FREE TO CONTINUE TO SHARE ANY FEEDBACK YOU HAVE IN THIS THREAD.

THANK YOU.

  • Because of the complaints by other people, I looked at the progress bar and said to myself that I could understand why a project manager would want the code changed to provide the segment count.

But it was a surprise to me that it was not implemented similar to other areas that allow you to choose either segment count or word count.

I was, however, happy that I now knew the change had been made, otherwise I would have been confused if I used the progress bar at some point and couldn't figure out why it was not showing the proper word count any more -- because there was no indication anywhere that a change had been made, and I would naturally have assumed that it was still supposed to show word counts, not segment counts, and this was a "bug". And then I would have reported the "bug" in the forum, just like the other translators were trying to do.

I therefore consider myself lucky to have learned that the change had been made. It falls into that very large category of odd things in Studio that are "good to know".

My original comment was simply that the code to display the word count was obviously available, since it was used before, and it would have been easy to add a dropdown in the ribbon where you could choose segments or words.

Since the new code for the segment count is now available, the only thing needed would be the simple addition of a dropdown in the ribbon, adding a branch in the code, and putting back the old word count code at the branch.

Throwing out the old code for the word count seemed silly to me. And based on the reactions of other translators who actually use the word count and thought this was a "bug", you can see there is a demand for both counts. Translators want word count, project managers want segment count.

In my opinion at the time, telling the translators to check the other places where the word count is shown is a bit "rude", given that providing a choice would have been so easy.

But in the end, I really couldn't care less, since I don't generally use the progress bar anyway. Basta. Do what you want.

I'm not going to lose any sleep over it now that I know the change was made.

  • Thanks  .  Is this the only feedback you have on the new Manager View?  Everything else about it is perfect?
