Using Trados Studio 2019 and 2021 files (TM, SDLXLIFF, SDLTB) between versions

Hello,

I have a Freelance Plus license for both Trados Studio 2019 and 2021. The 2021 version is installed on one machine, and the 2019 is installed on the other (actually, on a different partition and OS on the same machine).

I'd like to be able to keep using the 2019 version and exchange files between the versions. I'm wondering: are there any cross-compatibility issues? (I did a search on this forum and only found loosely related topics, but nothing tangible so far on cross-compatibility, both upward and downward compatibility.)

I realize that the Freelance Plus versions of both 2019 and 2021 can be used on two different machines, but I already have the second copy installed on my remote laptop, so that's why I wonder about cross-compatibility between versions.

Any information or advice you might have would be appreciated. Thank you!

    One thing you would need to be wary of is filetypes.  If the version of the filetype is different between the versions you have installed, and for some filetypes it may be (you can easily check just by going through them and looking at the versions in the filetype settings), then you should practice starting and finishing the projects on the same machine (belt and braces approach).

    You can work on the translations on either, but things like saving target, QA etc. "may" not be possible on the machine that didn't create the original project.

    Interesting information regarding possible problems in saving the target on the machine that didn't create the original project. In my case, I never have to create projects—I just open what I get from the agency, translate it, export to bilingual DOCX and then save as return package. I'm hoping that this will work fine on either version, with data created on either version. Mostly, the source files I get were originally MS Office files (DOCX, XLSX, PPTX), but I do get the occasional InDesign data (IDML) in the project packages as well.

    From what you say, it seems that as long as the file types are identical between versions (meaning the way that Studio interprets and assembles the translatable SDLXLIFF from the source document, as I understand), going between versions would not pose a big problem. Still, I can see the wisdom in starting and finishing the project on the same machine, if possible Slight smile
