Bilingual Excel - pre-scanning error. The element has unexpected child element.

I need to create a cell-based TMs from pretranslated bilingual Excel files.

To make sure the segmentation corresponds exactly to the file structure I'd like to create projects using the bilingual Excel file type, as this file type does NOT do paragraph-based segmentation, but goes cell by cell. Of course I could convert Excel to TMX quite easily, but in this case it does not really work, as the Excel files are not fully pretranslated, there are empty target cells. Such segments would be simply ignored in Studio, when updating the TM.

Unfortunately, neither S2021 nor S2022 will work with bilingual Excel. This is the error message I get:

Trados Studio task results window showing 4 warnings for file 'strings_20221129_cs.xlsx' with pre-scanning errors related to unexpected child elements.

I also attach the Excel file here. What is wrong with it?

strings_20221129_cs.xlsx

  • Hi ,

I get the same error as you in Trados Studio 2022, 17.0.5.14757.

Anyway, I've managed to make it working splitting the file in 2 chunks (30k segments approx. each):

Trados Studio editor showing two split files named 1 30k.xlsx and 2 30k.xlsx under the project 'Multiple Files - Jerzy2'.

Trados Studio translation grid displaying source text in German and target text in Czech with the file type 'Bilingual Excel v 1.0.0.0' indicated at the top.

You can do the same as a workaround while this issue is fixed.

Maybe there is a limit in the number of segments?

    I've found another issue:

Settings used to open before mentioned files:

Trados Studio file types settings showing 'Bilingual Excel' and 'Microsoft Excel 2007-2019' file types checked, with 'Microsoft Excel 97-2003' unchecked.

But If I check also the Microsoft Excel 2007-2019 filetype (Bilingual checked and on top):

Trados Studio file types settings showing 'Bilingual Excel' unchecked and 'Microsoft Excel 2007-2019' checked, indicating a change in file type priority.

then the big file opens in Trados Studio, but without target content:

Trados Studio translation grid with the file type 'SpreadsheetML v. 1' showing source text but no target content, indicating an issue with target text display.

As if the regular Excel filetype were used, but it shouldn’t have been used as it is below the Bilingual filetype. I think RWS must have a look at this Bilingual filetype anyway.

Last, I’ve got a few out of memory errors while testing this.

Many thanks for taking your time to confirm, that the file does not open in S2022.

I've done something different—I copied only the source & target column into a new file, saved this under a new name and was able to open this very file in S2022 without any hassle, using Bilingual Excel.

My task consisted of creating paragraph-based TMs out of 15 Excel files for 15 language pairs. This works now using the new files, containing only source and target column, which is pretty enough for the task.

Using tab-delimited way via Olifant would have worked too, but then the TM would contain all content as plain text, while using Bilingual Excel allowed me to tag some unnecessary content.
