Trados Studio 2022 - target MS Word file doesn't open - table of cont.

Hello,

I'm working with Trados Studio 2022 and MS Word 2019.

I forgot to erase Table of contents before stating and after 15 days of work I can't open target files.

I tried with one of them and for sure it's these Tables of contents the problem. Not fusion of segments, etc.

Any ideas to generate proper target files without starting again from scratch.

Thank you and happy new year,

Diana

  • Hi ,

Did you run Verify (F8 shortcut) to check for tags?

Trados Studio Project Settings window showing Verification options with QA Checker 3.0 and Tag Verifier checked.

You need to solve any issues showing up.

  • Thank you very much for your  answer. I've just tried that, but it didn't work.

  • Hi  ,

tried that, but it didn't work

So no tag issues found, or you corrected all tag issues found?

Could you also post the version number of Trados Studio? It should be 17.0.5.14757 (available in the ribbon, Help > About). Please update if needed.

I guess it’s a DOCX file and not an old DOC file, right?

Could you post a screen-capture of the error you get when you open the document in Word?

Could you play with the options in this list (available in your Project Settings > FileTypes > Microsoft Word 2007-2019 > Common > When an issue with inline tags is found.

Trados Studio Project Settings showing FileTypes options for Microsoft Word 2007-2019 with 'When an issue with inline tags is found' selected, displaying three options: 'Use source segment content', 'Continue with errors', and 'Stop processing'.

I guess you have selected Continue with errors. Please try with the other 2 options: Use source segment content or Stop processing and generate the target file. Different outcome?

Last, if nothing works, please create a new project with your source file, don’t translate anything, and generate the target file?

  • There are some tags in English that change in Spanish (as "-" and longer hyphen for minus, so I erased those from the check results.

I was wrong about my Trados version, sorry. It's  Trados Studio 2021 SR2 - 16.2.9.9198
I can't find "when an issue with inline tags..." so please se attached document.

My MS Word document is *.docx. In the following I'm sending you two screen captures.

    Thanks again for your help,

    Diana

The problem is not necessarilly TOC. This error message appears typically, when tags like field, image or similar placeholder tags have been moved between paragraphs. This happens, when merging segments containing such tags. On S2022 you get a warning and are not able to save target in such case. I cannot remember how S2021 behaved in that terms.

I'm afraid you will need to retranslate all the files again. Please download the test version of Studio 2022 and install it. During the test phase it will allow you to use Perfect Match. So create a new project in S2022 (you can use the old project as template), add the Word files there and use your sdlxliff files from your previous project to pretranslate the new files using Perfect Match. Then test, if you can save and open the target files. Should segments remain untranslated due to being merged in your previous translation, merge this segments when translating. However, you should then go this way:

    • For segments with NO tags inside, the merge should not cause any problems.
    • Before merging segments with tags, save the sdlxliff. Then save the target and check, if you can open it. If yes, all is fine. If no, close the sdlxliff WITHOUT SAVING! Reopen and follow the next step.
    • When a field, image or similar tag is in the segments, do NOT merge these. Leave them splitted, insert the translation accordingly and do NOT confirm these segments
    • Repeat these steps until you'll finish translating.

  • Thank you Jerzy,

I'll try to install Studio 2022 in the following days but not today. I've to deliver them tomorrow morning. So I have not much time left.

At present, I'm translating again my files from the project memory.

I'm erasing Table of contents first and I'm merging segments. Till now I've had no problem and I am on the third. There are four left... I'll try to pay more attention when tags are involved and make the verifications you mentioned. Perhaps that's the clue

    Best regards,

    Diana
